Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Joy,
I hope this letter finds you in the best of physical and spirits. I am writing to express my plan to celebrate a tenth year college completion anniversary with all college friends and classmates. Additionally, I got allured by the hotel Residency Inn and want to host a celebration their on 26th November. It will be a small party of 70 people.
I assume this would be a great way to meet old friends to remember those valuable days together. Moreover, the college's trust provides financial aid. Consequently, I can organize a wonderful party for all. I think spending time with college peers would be a good idea to take a break from hectic busy schedules.
I would appreciate it if you could provide me with a few contact numbers of the classmates. Futhermore, I know you are a professional designer, hence it would be a great support if you can customise an invitation card for guests. Please feel free to connect me if have any enquiry at your earliest convenience.
Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you,
Yours lovingly,
Reena

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You have successfully covered all three bullet points required by the task instructions. First, you specified the kind of event by proposing a small party of 70 people at the hotel Residency Inn on 26th November to mark the tenth anniversary. Second, you explained why celebrating in this way is beneficial, mentioning that it helps reconnect with old peers and provides a good break from hectic schedules, although the mention of college trust financial aid is a little out of context. Third, you clearly described the help needed, asking for contact numbers of classmates and requesting assistance with designing an invitation card. Your tone is appropriately friendly and semi-formal throughout, fitting the general letter format. All parts of the prompt are addressed adequately, placing this comfortably in the Band 6.0 to 6.5 range.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter is structured into clear paragraphs, with each paragraph dealing with a distinct part of the prompt: the event details, the reasons and financial aid, and the requests for help. You have used some transitional phrases such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'Consequently' to link your ideas together. However, some of the cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical or forced, such as 'Consequently, I can organize a wonderful party for all' following the mention of the college trust. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, and the overall progression of ideas is easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 6.5 performance.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'anniversary', 'financial aid', 'customise', and 'professional designer'. However, there are some noticeable word choice errors and awkward collocations. For example, writing 'in the best of physical and spirits' is incorrect, as is saying 'got allured by the hotel Residency Inn' instead of 'attracted to' or 'chose'. Furthermore, you wrote 'celebration their' instead of 'there', and 'connect me if have any enquiry' instead of 'contact me if you have any enquiries'. These minor inaccuracies restrict your score to Band 6.0, as they show an attempt at less common vocabulary with some resulting errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms in your letter, such as conditional and relative clauses like 'I would appreciate it if you could provide me...' and '...hence it would be a great support if you can customise an invitation card'. While many of your sentences are clear, there are several grammatical errors and tense shifts, such as 'if you can customise' instead of 'if you could customise', and 'connect me if have any enquiry' which misses a subject pronoun and preposition. Punctuation is generally fine, but these grammatical slips across complex structures keep your score at a Band 6.0.
