IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Smith,

Hope this letter finds you well. It's been a decade since we have passed out from the college. I was planning to celebrate our 10 year anniversary with eveyone. I am organising reunion party on 31st October.

I firmly believe that it's a good time to get back to each other. We hardly sees each other because of our hactic work schedule, and there will be no better time than this to relive our memories.

I already talked to the management of the college about the reunion, and they are agreed on it. They are ready to give us a hall for the celebration, and afterwords we can go to the same classroom where we used to study.

I need your help to reach out our classmates. I am busy in the organising the event and won't have enough time for that. I would be so greatful if you can help me with this.

Thank you so much, and I can't wait to see you again.

Best regards,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. First, the writer clearly states the kind of celebration event they want to organise, specifically a reunion party at the college on October 31st involving a hall and a classroom visit. Second, they explain why this is a good way to celebrate, noting that it is a great time to reconnect after a decade and relive college memories despite hectic schedules. Finally, they clearly describe the help needed by asking the friend to help reach out to other classmates. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend. The bullet points are well covered, and the task requirements are fully met, earning a strong band score in this category.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear and logical organisation. It begins with an appropriate greeting, follows a natural progression from the announcement of the event to the reasons for it, details the logistical arrangements, and finishes with a specific request for help and a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas, such as the event description, the rationale, college arrangements, and the request for assistance. Cohesive devices like 'I firmly believe', 'afterwords', and 'I already talked' are used reasonably well, though referencing and transitions could be slightly more natural in places to reach higher bands. Overall, the flow is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an informal letter. Phrases such as 'hactic work schedule', 'relive our memories', and 'reach out our classmates' clearly convey the intended meaning. However, there are some minor lexical and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'eveyone' instead of 'everyone', 'passed out' instead of 'graduated' (passed out is more informal/colloquial and less precise for finishing college in international English), 'afterwords' instead of 'afterwards', and 'greatful' instead of 'grateful'. Despite these errors, communication is not impeded, and the tone remains friendly and appropriate throughout.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I firmly believe that it's a good time to get back to each other' and 'We hardly sees each other because of our hactic work schedule'. There are a few noticeable grammatical errors, notably subject-verb agreement issues like 'We hardly sees each other' instead of 'We hardly see each other', and 'they are agreed on it' instead of 'they agreed on it' or 'they have agreed to it'. Additionally, preposition use needs minor refinement, such as 'busy in the organising' instead of 'busy organising'. However, these errors do not impede overall communication, and punctuation is generally handled correctly.
