Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Rahul,

I hope you are doing great in life. It's been 10 years we graduated from college. Therefore, I have planned small get-together party with all our classmantes and friends.

To begin with, I have decided to arrange this eent in the Gen-ZZ cafe in which we used to spend our most of the time during the college life. The reason behind this is that, this place has a lots of our memories of college era. For instance, our first fight for that one momo, and you remember that, when zaid proposed niki and got rejected and we couldn't stop our laugh. LoL.

Futhermore, we also organize a small pep talk. So, every person in the our group can discuss what they have been doing during this ten years and about their current life and relations. This would be great opportunity to get to know each other.

As I recall, I have almost invited except Ranvijay and Tara. As they have change dtheir contact numbers. That said, can you just make me a tiny favour ? Please inform them about this gathering.

Seen you soon.

Take car,

Mkasud

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response covers all three bullet points required by the task prompt in a natural and friendly manner. The student successfully says what kind of celebration they want to organise by proposing a small get-together party at the Gen-ZZ cafe, explains why it is a good idea due to shared memories and nostalgia, and describes the help needed by asking Rahul to contact Ranvijay and Tara. The tone is entirely appropriate for a letter to a friend. The bullet points are all clearly identifiable and well-developed, with relevant supporting details such as specific nostalgic anecdotes. Therefore, the response fully satisfies the requirements of Task Achievement and achieves a solid band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, making use of standard informal paragraphing. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as using 'To begin with', 'The reason behind this is that', and 'Futhermore' to structure the middle paragraphs. However, paragraphing and referencing are occasionally impacted by mechanical or slightly informal transitions. For instance, the transition 'LoL' and the sudden shift to the request regarding missing contacts show minor lapses in formal paragraph flow, though overall logic and progression remain clear throughout the text. Cohesion is managed well enough to meet the criteria for a band 6.5 to 7.0, with clear progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate and natural range of vocabulary suitable for an informal letter, incorporating conversational phrases like 'doing great in life', 'get-together party', and 'pep talk'. There are some spelling and typographical errors, such as 'classmantes', 'eent', 'Futhermore', 'change dtheir', and 'Take car', alongside some awkward collocations like 'spend our most of the time'. Despite these minor errors and slips, communication is never impeded, and the vocabulary used successfully conveys the intended message and informal tone. The writer attempts less common phrases with varying success, positioning this safely within the band 6 range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses ('cafe in which we used to spend') and conditional or temporal structures ('when zaid proposed niki and got rejected'). There are several grammatical and mechanical errors throughout the letter, such as 'It's been 10 years we graduated' (missing time preposition), 'this place has a lots of our memories', and punctuation spacing errors. However, these errors do not impede overall communication and the reader easily understands the intended meaning. The control of grammar reflects a standard mixed range with typical minor slips characteristic of a band 6 level.
