Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear John,

I hope you're doing well.

I know its been ages since we have last talked. Next month it is going to be 10 years since we graduated from college and our whole group moved and got busy in their own lifes. On the ocassion of 10th anniversary I was planning to arrange a get together of all our college friends. I am planning to rent an Airbnb near college with food, snacks and games.

It will be great to see everyone after so many years. Additionally, everyone will get a short break from their hectic schedule.

I was wondering if you can help me with the preparation of this event. I definitely need a helping hand as I won't be able to handle all arrangements all alone. You used to be the president of the activities club, I can't imagine any other person name other than you who can help and make our 10th anniversary another good memorable day for everyone.

Moreover, I have also asked other people to help us with sending out invitation to everyone, this is going to be our priority task so that everyone should have penality of time to plan for this gathering.

I am really excited to meet everyone and drink like crazy like we used to do back in college. Looking forward to hear from you.

Your friend,

Navdeep

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student has successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, the letter clearly outlines the proposed celebration event by mentioning renting an Airbnb near the college with food, snacks, and games. Second, it explains why this is a good idea, noting that it provides a chance to see everyone and offers a necessary break from hectic schedules. Third, it describes the help needed, specifically asking John to assist with the event preparation and organization due to his past experience as the activities club president. The tone is appropriate for writing to a college friend, and the purpose of the letter is evident throughout. Therefore, the response fulfills all requirements of the task very well, earning a solid Band 7.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear overall logical organization, moving smoothly from a friendly opening and reminiscing to the specific proposal, the reasons for it, the request for help, and a closing remark. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics, such as the details of the event, the reasons, the request for assistance, and other delegation tasks. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, although phrases like 'Moreover' and referencing could be slightly more natural. Minor cohesion slips do not impede understanding, maintaining a clear progression of ideas throughout the letter. This performance aligns well with the Band 7.0 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for a general correspondence task. Phrases such as 'hectic schedule', 'get together', and 'preparation' are used correctly and fit the context well. However, there are a few lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'its been ages' (missing apostrophe), 'lifes' (incorrect plural form of life), 'ocassion' (spelling error), and 'penality of time' (misuse of phrasing, likely meaning plenty of time). While these minor errors and spelling slips show some limitations in precision, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding the reader, making a Band 6.0 appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at complex structures such as 'I was wondering if you can help me with the preparation of this event' and 'You used to be the president of the activities club, I can't imagine any other person name other than you...'. There are, however, several grammatical errors and punctuation issues present, including 'its been ages', 'when we have last talked' (tense choice), 'everyone... got busy in their own lifes' (pronoun agreement), and a comma splice in the sentence about the activities club president. Despite these recurring errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, and communication is not impeded. This reflects the characteristics of a Band 6.0 performance.
