Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Salma,

I hope you are doing great. Its been a long time since we last met.

Next weekend is 28 Sepemember, the very same date when we all met for the last time. I was thinking to celebrate this anniversary with our friends and colleagues from our batch.

I am particulary thinking to arrange a small party at the cafe next to our college where we used to have lunch every other day. After party we could have a dinner together.

Its been ten years now. A lot has changed. Many classmates are married, some are teachers now. It would be a great opportunity to catch up on. Remember, when we were in college, we used to conversate that one day, we all will be professional one day, some will be scientics, some will be mothers and how our children will be crying during our meetups. I think, we should also bring our children.

I am on a business trip and will arrive one day before the anniversary. Could you please help me to organise this party. I will share you further details once you confirm your availibility. I have already shared the invitations to all our classmates.

Please do let me know what you think. I look forward to your positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Nirma Shaheen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully covered all three bullet points required in the prompt. You mentioned the kind of celebration event you would like to organise (a small party at the college cafe followed by dinner, bringing children along), explained why it would be good to celebrate in this way (ten years have passed, people have changed, and it is a great opportunity to catch up and reminisce), and described the help you need (asking Salma to help organise the party because you will arrive just one day before on a business trip). The tone is appropriately informal and friendly. However, there are minor confusions in content, such as referring to friends and colleagues from your 'batch' and mentioning 'colleagues' instead of classmates, which slightly blurs the focus. Overall, your ideas are well-developed and the task is fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your letter has a clear overall organisation and follows a logical progression from greeting to stating the purpose, explaining the choice, asking for help, and signing off appropriately. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate distinct ideas, such as the date and event, the location and activities, the nostalgic reflection, and the logistical request. However, some cohesive devices and referencing are slightly faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'After party' misses an article, and 'catch up on' at the end of the sentence is grammatically incomplete. Paragraphs are generally cohesive, but paragraph transitions could be smoother. Despite these minor flaws, the logical flow is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempt some less common items such as 'anniversary', 'opportunity', and 'business trip'. However, there are several noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices. For example, you wrote 'colleagues' instead of classmates, misspelled 'particulary' and 'Sepemember', and used the invented verb 'conversate' instead of 'talk' or 'converse'. Furthermore, 'catch up on' is used incorrectly at the end of a clause. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a Band 6 level where vocabulary control shows some inconsistency and spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, such as conditional and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical errors and punctuation issues. For instance, 'Its been a long time' lacks the apostrophe in 'It's', and 'Next weekend is 28 Sepemember' is awkward phrasing. You also wrote 'we used to conversate that one day, we all will be professional one day', which contains a redundant repetition of 'one day' and a tense shift error ('will' instead of 'would'). Additionally, you wrote 'share you further details' instead of 'share further details with you' and 'availibility' with a spelling error. While these errors occur frequently, they rarely impede overall understanding.
