Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sasha,
Hi! How are you? I hope you are doing well. The reason I'm writing you this letter is bacuase i've been thinking about organising an event with all our friends and classmates to celebrate our 10 year anniversary of being graduated from college.
I would like to organise a big dinner party with all our classmates and our professors at the Premier Inn resort. They have ample space in their banquette and can easly accomodate 60 to 70 guests. We can have a dance floor, music and some fun games. I would also like to have collage of our old photos to cherish the good memories that we made during our college time.
I think it would be a good way to celebrate this way as we can talk with everyone, remeber some good times we spend together. Moreover, spening time together we could reconnect with some of our classmates that we lost touch with after graduating.
Could you please help me organise this event by contacting our old classmates and collect their current phone numbers or email addresses? Also if you can help me with the photographs and i'll make the collage. Once we have a final guest list, I can take care of the invitations and other arrangements.
I hope you can help me make this reunion a memorable one. Please let me know what you think.
Best wishes,
John

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
John has successfully covered all parts of the task prompt. He clearly states the kind of event he wants to organise, proposing a dinner party at the Premier Inn resort with classmates and professors. Furthermore, he explains why this is a good choice, mentioning the ability to talk, remember good times, and reconnect with lost contacts. Finally, he outlines the help he needs from Sasha, specifically asking her to contact old classmates and collect their phone numbers or email addresses, as well as assist with photographs. The tone is appropriately friendly and informal for a letter to a college friend. Ideas are well-developed and fulfil all bullet points of the task instructions effectively, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the initial greeting and purpose of writing to the event details, the rationale behind it, and finally the request for assistance. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Also', and referencing pronouns ('They', 'We') are used effectively to connect ideas, though some transitions are straightforward. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, event description, reasons, request for help, and concluding remarks into readable sections. Overall cohesion is well managed, supporting a clear flow of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary suitable for a general letter. Phrases such as 'reconnect with some of our classmates', 'memorable one', and 'cherish the good memories' show good lexical control. However, there are some spelling errors and minor inaccuracies, such as 'bacuase' instead of 'because', 'banquette' instead of 'banquet', 'easly' instead of 'easily', 'accomodat' instead of 'accommodate', and 'remeber' instead of 'remember'. Despite these spelling lapses, the vocabulary is sufficient for the task and does not impede communication, allowing for a clear and natural description of the planned event.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
John demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as 'The reason I'm writing you this letter is bacuase i've been thinking about...' and 'I think it would be a good way to celebrate this way as we can talk...'. There are some grammatical and punctuation errors, including capitalization slips ('i've', 'i'll'), minor preposition use like 'writing you this letter' instead of 'writing to you', and a minor stylistic duplication in 'celebrate this way as we can celebrate'. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the majority of sentences are understandable, showing adequate control over basic and intermediate sentence patterns.
