IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Monica,

I am writing to organise a reunion of our college section. It's been ages since we all have met, ten years is a long time. I was thinking we all spend a day together at the beach next month. We can play board games for the sake of nostalgia and catch up on lunch, followed by a 10th anniversary cake which, just like the good old days, will be on me.

This thought occured to me yesterday. While dinner at a high end restaurant in the city is the most convenient option, it doesn't allow us to catch up freely, look back on memories and be ourselves(loud) without bothering anyone around us. I have a hut at the French beach, so no one has to worry about availability, city traffic or the high rent of beach lodging.

Since you are connected with everyone on social media and hangout with them often, I deem you the most suitable to create a whatsapp group to connect me with everyone. Once that is done, I will discuss the plan invite them. I did not want to corner anyone so I haven't decided on the date yet so it may be mutually decided.

Looking forward to hearing from you and hoping this reunion plan comes to fruition.

all the best,

Muhammad Ali Noorani

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You have fully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly stated the kind of celebration event you want to organise by suggesting a day at the beach with board games, lunch, and a 10th-anniversary cake. You explained why this is a good choice by contrasting it with a high-end restaurant, noting that the beach provides privacy, a relaxed atmosphere, and a free venue since you own a hut at the French beach. Finally, you described the exact help you need from Monica, which is to create a WhatsApp group to connect you with everyone. Your tone is appropriately friendly and informal for a letter to a college friend, and all ideas are well-developed and clear.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and natural progression throughout. The introductory paragraph establishes the purpose of the letter, followed by body paragraphs that smoothly transition from the type of event to the reasons behind it, and finally to the specific request for help. You make good use of cohesive devices such as 'While dinner at a high end restaurant...', 'Since you are connected with everyone...', and 'Once that is done'. Paragraphing is used logically and appropriately to separate distinct ideas, resulting in a coherent and easily navigable text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an informal letter. Phrases such as 'for the sake of nostalgia', 'catch up on lunch', 'come to fruition', and 'corner anyone' show a natural control of lexical items and idiomatic language. There are only a few minor slips, such as 'occured' (which is misspelled as 'occurred' in correct spelling, though a minor slip here) and 'high end' missing a hyphen. Overall, the vocabulary is varied, precise, and entirely appropriate for the communication task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures with generally strong grammatical control. Complex sentences such as 'While dinner at a high end restaurant in the city is the most convenient option, it doesn't allow us to catch up freely...' are handled well. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as the tense phrasing in 'It's been ages since we all have met' (better as 'have met' or 'met'), and a missing verb or preposition in 'invite them' where you omitted 'and' or 'to'. However, the majority of your sentences are error-free and communication is never impeded.
