Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, the writer specifies the type of celebration event, which is a movie night at home to mark a ten-year college anniversary. Second, the explanation for why this is a good choice is clearly provided, mentioning the relaxed weekend atmosphere, the absence of work the next day, and the chance to avoid noisy restaurants and reminisce about college days. Third, the writer clearly describes the help needed, specifically asking for food menu suggestions (vegetarian and fast food) and assistance in choosing a restaurant to place the food order. The tone is appropriately informal and friendly throughout the letter, fulfilling the purpose of the general training writing task well. Ideas are adequately developed and relevant to the scenario presented.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear sequence of ideas, moving from the initial greeting and purpose of the invitation to the venue choice, reasons, and finally the request for help. Paragraphing is used, though the second paragraph is quite dense and combines multiple ideas that would have benefited from being separated into distinct paragraphs. Cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or faulty, such as 'Firsty i decided to arrnge in outside slide like hotel than i though...', which creates a slightly disjointed progression. Referencing is generally clear, but occasional abrupt transitions between sentences affect the overall flow. Overall, the organizational structure is adequate for a band 6 level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message about organising an anniversary party. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'friends group' instead of 'group of friends', 'launch party' instead of 'reunion party', 'outside slide' instead of 'outdoor venue', and 'mostly rushy' instead of 'crowded' or 'busy'. Spelling mistakes like 'toghter', 'planing', 'Firsty', 'arrnge', 'though', and 'assisstance' also appear. While these lexical errors and non-standard word choices do not impede the overall communication of the message, they prevent the score from reaching a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and concessive clauses ('Although event could be placed at resturant ,but i decided...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak. There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement ('Hope you and your family is doing well'), missing articles ('It's been a very long time to meet you', 'at weekend'), incorrect prepositions ('in next week', 'at night'), and punctuation spacing issues (spaces placed before commas and full stops). Furthermore, the double-marking conjunction error in 'Although... but...' demonstrates a lack of complete control over complex structures. These errors require some effort from the reader, placing the grammar firmly at the band 5 level.
