Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sudha,

How are you doing. Since it has been ten years since we left college, I would love to organize a reunion. The venue of the event will be at the Lakeside Cafe near university and invite all our classmates with their spouses. It will be a short 3 hour get together with dinner and some activities to make it little fun.

I am super excited to see all of our friends as it has been a decade. I was a bit scaptical about venue, but than i remembered we used to spend our majority of time as this Cafe and even used to bunk our classes for delicious food from Ramu uncle. Hence, this place will surely bring back those memories and embrassing stories from our school times.

I am planning to take care of majority of task, however only decoration is what I am worried for as I do not have any creative expertise. Thus, Can you please help me with that. I would really appreciate it.

Looking forward to see you soon.

Your lovely,

Najmin Manga.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, she specifies the kind of event she wants to organise: a ten-year college reunion at the Lakeside Cafe for a three-hour get-together with dinner and activities. Second, she explains why it is a good idea by mentioning shared nostalgic memories, such as bunking classes and eating food from Ramu uncle. Third, she clearly describes the help she needs, specifically requesting assistance with event decoration due to her lack of creative expertise. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, and all parts of the task are well-covered, fully satisfying the requirements for a Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following a natural progression. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the event details, the reasons for choosing the venue, and the request for help. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as 'Hence' and 'Thus', though there is some minor mechanical referencing ('as this Cafe' instead of 'at this cafe'). Overall, the letter demonstrates a clear logical flow and cohesion appropriate for a Band 7.0 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an informal letter, including terms like 'reunion', 'expertise', and 'decade'. However, there are some noticeable lexical and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'scaptical' instead of 'skeptical', 'embrassing' instead of 'embarrassing', and prepositional inaccuracies ('spend our majority of time as this Cafe'). While communication is never impeded, these slips in word choice and spelling place the response firmly in the Band 6.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and relative clauses ('I am super excited to see all of our friends as it has been a decade'). There are, however, several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including missing question marks in direct questions ('Thus, Can you please help me with that'), incorrect tense markers or missing prepositions ('Looking forward to see you soon' instead of 'seeing'), and punctuation lapses like comma splices ('The venue of the event will be at the Lakeside Cafe near university and invite...'). These errors are frequent enough to warrant a Band 6.0.
