Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Akash,

How are you? It's been a long time we haven't catch up. I am inviting you to the party at JW Marriot Hotel for reunion.

It's been ten year we all were so busy in their life and we haven'e met or spoke to each other. I am organising a get together where all the classmates will met and live our past memories as well. The party will be near the lake with some dance event as all our friends are keen to dancing. Moreover, the speeches from our classmate who are willing to share their past and present experience will be there. It will be quiet interesting. The food will be Thai and Chinease as everyone in our class like it.

According to me, I find this is the way to give surprise to everyone and to meet everyone in person face to face after the pandemic. The party will be on the weekend as everyone will be free and help them to have some enjoyable memories for future to talk. The sea side will be best place as most of our celebration held near the lakes.

At last, I will be busy in organising and taking care decoaration part of the party. I would need your help in taking care of the catering and also contacting our friend who are in touch with you as I don't want to miss anyone.

I am very excited for the party. Meet you at the party.

Your Sincerely,

Shivam

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the prompt. The writer specifies the kind of celebration event (a reunion party at the JW Marriott Hotel near a lake featuring dancing and speeches), explains why it is a good idea (to live past memories and reconnect after the pandemic on the weekend), and clearly describes what help is needed (catering assistance and contacting mutual friends). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly persona throughout. While some ideas like the location contain minor contradictions regarding lakes versus the seaside, the overall purpose of the task is fully met. The content is well-developed, relevant, and directly addresses the communication requirements of a General Training Task 1 letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard informal letter conventions. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct ideas, such as the event details, the justification, and the request for help. Cohesive devices are generally used appropriately, with transitional phrases like "Moreover" and "According to me" helping to guide the reader through the text, although some referencing is slightly clunky or mechanical. Paragraph transitions work well enough to maintain a clear overall progression. However, occasional mechanical referencing (such as referring to "the sea side" after previously mentioning a lake) slightly disrupts the smooth flow of information.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an informal letter, attempting some less common phrases such as "reunion," "get together," and "share their past and present experience." However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors that detract from precision, including "Marriot" instead of Marriott, "Chinease" instead of Chinese, "decoaration" instead of decoration, and the awkward phrasing "keen to dancing" instead of "keen on dancing." While these lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors are noticeable, they do not impede overall communication, allowing the reader to fully grasp the intended message.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional ideas. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, such as tense and preposition issues in "It's been a long time we haven't catch up" (should be 'haven't caught up') and "It's been ten year" (should be 'years'). Other errors include subject-verb agreement problems like "classmates will met" (should be 'will meet') and "celebration held" (should be 'celebrations are held'). Despite these frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, the sentence structures are sufficiently varied, and meaning is rarely obscured, aligning closely with the Band 6 descriptor.
