Student answer (Band 6.0)

dear sima

It has been 10 years since we did an event together. I am writing a letter to invite you to organize an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

As I love our indian festival Diwali and many of our classmates love Diwali, so I am willing to celebrate the Diwali festival with our college groups and with my friend on 1st January at my home around 9 pm.

For a long time, we have been busy with our work and further study, and we haven't had a chance to have a reunion and enjoy our memorable moments. So this is a time where we will enjoy ourselves by eating food and organizing a night event.

I need your help making some delicious sweets, as Ravi was making good food during school time and needs some help with the decorations. In the evening, I especially need a SIM as she is good singer and stage performer, so you will host at that night

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The candidate covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. They specify the kind of celebration event as a Diwali festival party on January 1st at their home around 9 pm, explain why it is a good way to celebrate after ten years of being busy with work and studies, and describe the help needed from Sima, such as organizing, making sweets, and hosting. However, the tone and content contain some minor inconsistencies, such as scheduling a Diwali celebration on January 1st and confusing the recipient Sima by asking her to organize the event while also assigning her specific hosting duties. Despite these minor oddities, all parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical sequence from greeting to the main invitation, the reasons for gathering, and finally the request for help. Paragraphing is used to separate different points, such as the event details, the justification, and the specific tasks for the friend. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or slightly faulty, seen in phrases like 'So this is a time where we will enjoy ourselves'. Referencing can also be slightly confusing, such as switching between addressing Sima directly and referring to her in the third person as 'a SIM as she is good singer'. Overall organization is clear enough to satisfy Band 6.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to successfully communicate their message about organizing a reunion. They attempt some less common vocabulary items such as 'anniversary', 'festival', and 'memorable moments'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'did an event together' instead of 'organized an event' or 'met', and 'stage performer, so you will host at that night'. Spelling and capitalization are also inconsistent, with 'indian' uncapitalized and 'kinds regard' instead of 'kind regards'. These limitations place the lexical resource at Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'For a long time, we have been busy with our work and further study, and we haven't had a chance to have a reunion'. There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues throughout the text, including lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences ('dear sima', 'It'), run-on clauses, and awkward phrasing like 'needs some help with the decorations' where the subject is ambiguous. While these errors are noticeable and require the reader to occasionally re-read, they rarely completely impede communication. This performance aligns well with Band 5.5 descriptors.
