Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sara,

I am thrilled to remind you that our 10 years graduation anniversary is coming closer.

As I know majority of our classmates have not been to college after graduation. It occured to me that we can organise an event to celebrate this anniversary in the activity hall of the college. We can start with an introduction including where is each of us standing in life right now. Afterwards there can be a local musical band performance followed by dinner. The night can end with a cake cutting ceremony with the Principal.

I believe it is a good idea on the grounds that we will not only be visiting the college but this will also serve as an opportunity to meet our teachers. Moreover, it will be an intimate evening so the alumni will be able to enjoy and connect without any problem. In addition to that, it is also going to be cost effective since we will not be paying for the hall.

I would highly appreciate if you contact the college administration in this regard. I would also like you to make a list of all the friends and classmates with their contact details so that they can be informed. I would be looking forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Mesha

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The student covers all bullet points of the prompt effectively. The letter successfully outlines the celebration event, proposing a gathering in the college activity hall featuring introductions, a local band, dinner, and a cake cutting ceremony with the Principal. The rationale behind this format is well explained, noting the opportunity to visit the college, reconnect with teachers, and enjoy an intimate, cost-effective evening. Furthermore, the writer clearly states the help needed by asking Sara to contact administration and compile a contact list of classmates. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a friend, maintaining a friendly yet purposeful register. All requirements of the task are fully satisfied, demonstrating strong overall development of ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard informal letter conventions. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: paragraph one introduces the purpose, paragraph two outlines the event details, paragraph three explains the benefits, and paragraph four requests specific help. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'As I know', 'Afterwards', 'Moreover', and 'In addition to that'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different thematic ideas, guiding the reader smoothly through the letter without any confusion or breakdown in progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary appropriate for a General Training correspondence task. Phrases such as 'thrilled to remind you', 'cost effective', and 'intimate evening' show a good attempt to use collocation and less common items. There are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as '10 years graduation anniversary' instead of '10-year graduation anniversary' or '10th graduation anniversary', and 'where is each of us standing in life right now' which is slightly awkward. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is varied enough to convey precise meaning and maintain the reader's interest, with errors that never impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or subordinate clauses such as 'As I know majority of our classmates have not been to college after graduation' and 'I would highly appreciate if you contact the college administration'. There are a few grammatical errors, notably the missing article before 'majority' ('As I know the majority...'), a tense slip ('is coming closer' instead of 'is approaching'), and a preposition choice ('contact the college administration in this regard'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are generally well controlled, and the errors present do not impede understanding, allowing the majority of sentences to communicate clearly.
