Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Raj,

I hope you are doing well. I want to inform you that I am considering to host an event for our college classmates to celebrate the 10th year anniversary.

I am planning to book a decent size banquet hall which can cater 100 plus people at one time. I was thinking to invite our teachers because they have been a great support for all of us. Additionally, meeting everyone once again will be exciting.

I have given the decoration and catering responsibility to banquet itself, this will help me in saving my quality time which i would love to spend with all of my friends. I was thinking to make formal dress code mandatory as it would look appropriate while clicking photographs. This event will be successful, and will allow our fellowmates to relive their memories.

However, I need your assistance in printing out banners which would mention the 10th year anniversary. Also I need your help in deciding which flavoured cake we should get for everyone.

Let me know if you have any further questions. I can not wait to see you again.

Best wishes,

Pritam Mandal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student has successfully covered all parts of the task prompt. Pritam clearly states the kind of celebration event he would like to organise, describing a 10th-year college anniversary celebration in a banquet hall for over 100 people and former teachers. He explains why this celebration is beneficial, noting that it allows fellow classmates to relive their memories and reconnect. Furthermore, he clearly describes the help needed from Raj, which includes printing banners and deciding on a cake flavor. The tone is appropriately friendly and personal throughout, fulfilling the functional requirements of a General Training correspondence task. All bullet points are fully addressed, and ideas are extended in a natural, logical manner appropriate for a Band 7 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following a standard correspondence layout. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the announcement of the event to details about the venue and dress code, and finally to the specific requests for help. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately to separate distinct thoughts. Cohesive devices are handled adequately, with words like 'Additionally' and 'However' used to guide the reader. However, referencing is occasionally slightly loose, such as referring to 'banquet itself' without an article. Overall, the text demonstrates clear logical organisation and cohesion that keeps the reader oriented throughout the letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'anniversary', 'banquet hall', 'mandatory', and 'assistance'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary items, though occasional word choice and collocation inaccuracies occur, such as writing 'considering to host' instead of 'considering hosting', or 'banquet itself' omitting the article 'the'. Despite these minor lexical errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly and precisely. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and communication is never impeded by lexical limitations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses ('which can cater 100 plus people') and conditional or temporal framing effectively. There are several error-free sentences, showing good control of basic structures. However, a few grammatical inaccuracies persist, such as 'considering to host' (gerund/infinitive error), 'saving my quality time which i would love' (capitalisation slip and article omission), and 'printing out banners which would mention the 10th year anniversary' (slight awkwardness in phrasing). Punctuation is generally sound, and these minor errors rarely impede communication, placing the writing comfortably within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.
