Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Tirtha,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to organise an event to celebrate 10th anniversary of our graduation.I am planning to invite our friends as well as our classmates.

I would like to organise a get together party at one of the best restaurants in our city. I think it would be the 'Spice petals'. We are approximately 40 people and it would be in the evening so that everyone can join after work. I am planning to arrange party on Friday of this month as weekend is off for almost everyone.

Furthermore, I think it would be great to celebrate in this way because we haven't got a chance to meet each other frequently after graduation as everybody is busy in either job or family responsibilities. Apart from this, we will relive our college memories once we will meet.

I will organise everything related to restaurant such as catering, open bar and so on. But, I need your help so that you can contact to half of our batch and I will invite the rest.

I am eagerly waiting for your response.

Thank you.

Yours Faithfully,

Shraddha Kapadia

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all parts of the task by clearly stating the kind of celebration event you would like to organise, explaining why it would be a good way to celebrate, and describing the help you need from your friend. Your tone is appropriately friendly and conversational for an informal letter to a college peer. To reach a higher level, you could have extended your ideas even further by adding more vivid descriptions of the planned evening or offering more elaborate suggestions for how the coordination could be split between you, rather than keeping the details somewhat general.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter shows clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You use a natural paragraphing structure where each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter to the venue details, the justification, and finally the request for help. You employ appropriate cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Apart from this', and 'such as' to link your ideas effectively. To push into higher bands, ensure that transitions feel entirely seamless and avoid any minor mechanical sequencing, making the flow even more sophisticated and natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an informal letter, successfully incorporating phrases like 'graduation', 'get together party', and 'family responsibilities'. However, your vocabulary choice remains fairly standard and basic in places, showing only limited attempts at less common lexical items. There are also slight awkwardness issues in word choice and collocation, such as saying 'arrange party on Friday' without an article, and 'contact to half of our batch' where the preposition 'to' is unnecessary. Expanding your range of idiomatic language and precise phrasing would improve this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You demonstrate a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and time clauses such as 'so that everyone can join after work' and 'once we will meet'. Your control of grammar is generally good, but you do make a few minor errors, notably tense inconsistency and verb phrasing like 'celebrate 10th anniversary' missing the article 'the', and 'once we will meet' where the present simple should follow 'once' instead of the future tense. To achieve a higher score, you should aim for a wider variety of complex structures with greater error-free frequency.
