Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Aamir,

I hope you are doing well! Its been decade since we completed our graduation and all of our friends and classmates are busy in their own different careers. I was hoping if we could do getoghether to celebrate ten years anniversary by hosting an event. I believe casual social gatherings would be great way to celebrate the envent. For instance, throwing a low-key party at the backyard of the house, with the barbeque and some soft drinks along with the music and fun games will not only feel alleviated but also reminds us our old college days.

In my opinion, I assume weekends would be best to host such party. As on holidays everyone will be free from work schedules or any other commitments. Additionally, Halloween would be the best day to celebrate, as it comes at the end of the October. Fortunately, the halloween holiday is on Sunday and would be amazing to reunion with our friends and classmates.

I will be more than thankful, if you could do me a favour in organising this event in a smooth way possible. I have a huge backyard space where we can celebrate the party. Moreover, I will look after the seating arrangements and lighting facilities. However, I appreciate if you organise the barbeque and music appliances to the party. At the end we will split the expenses among our college students.

I m looking forward to your optimistic response to organising this event.

Yours faithfully,

Wafiya

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all parts of the letter prompt. You clearly stated the kind of event you wanted to organise by mentioning a casual social gathering, specifically 'throwing a low-key party at the backyard of the house, with the barbeque and some soft drinks'. You effectively explained why this would be a good celebration by noting how it would 'remind us our old college days'. Furthermore, you successfully described the help you need from your friend, such as organising the 'barbeque and music appliances'. Your tone is appropriately friendly and consistent throughout the letter. To reach a higher level, your ideas could be even more fully extended with richer supporting details, avoiding minor over-generalisations while maintaining a clear focus across all bullet points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter shows a clear overall structure, with an appropriate opening and closing, and information is logically organised into distinct paragraphs. You successfully used paragraphing to separate your ideas, dedicating the first paragraph to the event type, the second to the timing, and the third to the division of help. However, some of your cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as starting multiple sentences with transitions like 'In my opinion, I assume' or 'Moreover'. To move up, you could integrate cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that referencing between sentences is smoother, avoiding minor abrupt shifts in the flow of information.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'alleviated', 'commitments', and 'reunion', even though some word choices and collocations were slightly inaccurate. For instance, phrases like 'Its been decade' (missing an article), 'ten years anniversary' (redundant phrasing), and 'music appliances' (unnatural collocation) hindered precise expression. Additionally, there are minor lexical errors such as 'getoghether' and 'envent'. To achieve a higher band, you need to use a wider range of vocabulary with greater precision, ensuring that uncommon lexical items are used naturally and correctly in context without noticeable spelling or word-choice errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You successfully produced a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout the letter, such as 'I will be more than thankful, if you could do me a favour in organising this event in a smooth way possible.' While your meaning is generally clear, you made several grammar and punctuation errors, including missing apostrophes ('Its', 'halloween'), incorrect prepositions ('in the backyard'), and awkward phrasing ('reminds us our old college days'). To reach the next level, you should aim for a higher proportion of error-free sentences when using complex grammatical structures, ensuring better control over punctuation and article usage.
