Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Barira,

I hope you are fine, i am also fine here. Its been ten years since we left the college and we had never met again, I was sitting alone and thinking that we should celebrate our last day of college anniversary with our friends and classmates.

Firstly, I thought that we can arrange a one dish party at my home or wherever you guys want like if you people think that a restaurant is best for the party then i am absolutely ok with that. We will go to the best place of the city for buffet.

Secondly, we can also plan a meetup in our college so that we can meet our professors again and could discuss our lives and professions. Our teachers will happy to see that their hardwork and guidance made our career and we are living our best life. Then we will go to our cafeteria and will enjoy our favourite lunch Naan samosa.

I hope you guys will love my meetup idea. i,ll wait for your reply.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response covers the main bullet points of the task by mentioning a celebration event, explaining reasons for it, and describing help needed, though some parts are treated minimally. For instance, the prompt asks you to describe what help you need to organise this event, but your text focuses more on asking for opinions and brainstorming ideas (such as 'if you people think that a restaurant is best... i am absolutely ok with that') rather than explicitly stating what specific assistance or collaboration you require from Barira. This partial development places the task response at the lower tier. To achieve a higher score, you should clearly outline concrete tasks you need help with, such as contacting other classmates or booking a venue.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

Your letter shows an attempt at logical organisation, using paragraphs to separate different aspects of the celebration, such as the initial ideas and the college meetup plan. You also use basic cohesive devices like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly' to structure your points. However, the overall progression lacks smooth transitions between ideas, and some referencing is repetitive or unclear, such as 'I hope you are fine, i am also fine here.' To improve, you need to use a wider and more natural variety of linking words and ensure that each paragraph flows logically into the next without abrupt shifts in topic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used throughout the letter is fairly basic, with repetitive phrases such as 'we can' and 'party.' You make some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'professors,' 'guidance,' and 'profession,' but these are accompanied by simple word choices and minor collocation issues, such as writing 'left the college' instead of 'graduated from college.' The range is minimally adequate to convey your message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility expected at higher levels. To improve, try incorporating more sophisticated vocabulary and natural collocations related to social events and reunions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

Your letter relies heavily on a limited range of simple and compound sentence structures joined by commas, such as 'I was sitting alone and thinking that we should celebrate our last day of college anniversary...' There are frequent punctuation errors, including comma splices and lowercase letters for 'i'. When you attempt longer or more complex sentences, control decreases, leading to grammatical slips like 'Our teachers will happy to see'. To lift your grammar score, you need to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence structures while improving accuracy and punctuation control.
