Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Ali,
I hope you are doing well. I cannot believe that it has already been ten years since we left college! I am thinking of organising a reunion party for all our old classmates to celebrate this special anniversary.
I would like to arrange a dinner at a nice restaurant near our college, followed by some fun activities such as sharing old memories, looking at our college photographs and giving short speeches. I think this would be a great way to celebrate because it would give everyone a chance to meet after such a long time and remember the wonderful days we spent together.
I need your help in contacting our former classmates and finding their current phone numbers or email addresses. Could you also help me choose a suitable restaurant and arrange the food? Your ideas would be very helpful.
Please let me know what you think. I hope we can make this reunion a memorable event.
Best wishes,
Ahmed

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task. The purpose of the letter is clearly established in the opening paragraphs, where you outline a reunion dinner at a nice restaurant near your college. You effectively explain why this celebration style is beneficial, noting that it provides a chance to catch up and reminisce about college days. Furthermore, you clearly detail the help needed from your friend, specifically regarding contacting former classmates, finding their contact details, and choosing a restaurant. Ideas are well-extended and supported throughout the letter, reflecting a clear understanding of the communicative purpose. To push towards a higher level, the response could incorporate slightly more elaborate development or nuanced details regarding the specific itinerary or atmosphere of the proposed event, ensuring every single bullet point is explored with maximum elaboration.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The letter demonstrates clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The tone is appropriate for writing to a college friend, and the opening and closing conventions are handled smoothly. Paragraphing is used effectively, with each paragraph dedicated to a distinct aspect of the message: the introduction and purpose, the celebration details and rationale, the request for assistance, and the sign-off. Cohesive devices are employed naturally, such as 'followed by some fun activities', 'because it would give everyone', and 'Could you also help me', which guide the reader effortlessly through the text. To achieve an even higher score, you could employ more sophisticated and varied cohesive links or reference words to connect ideas across paragraphs with absolute seamlessness.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
Your vocabulary choice demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly and appropriately. You successfully use less common functional phrases and vocabulary suited to an informal letter, such as 'reunion party', 'special anniversary', 'current phone numbers', and 'memorable event'. Word choice and collocations are generally natural, and spelling is entirely accurate throughout the text. To reach a higher band, the response would benefit from a wider variety of less common lexical items, idioms, or more precise descriptive phrases (such as substituting standard adjectives and verbs with more sophisticated alternatives) while maintaining total accuracy in style and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
You demonstrate good control of grammar and punctuation, successfully incorporating a variety of complex sentence structures alongside simpler ones. Examples of complex structures include 'I am thinking of organising a reunion party for all our old classmates to celebrate this special anniversary' and 'I think this would be a great way to celebrate because it would give everyone a chance to meet after such a long time'. The majority of your sentences are error-free, with accurate verb tenses, tense consistency, and correct use of articles and prepositions. To achieve an even higher level, you could experiment with a broader array of sophisticated grammatical structures, such as conditional clauses or inversion, while ensuring absolute flawlessness across all complex sentences.
