IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mehreen,

I received your letter yesterday, and I was so excited to know that you're planning to visit Pakistan. I am writing to let you know that I'm thinking of organsing an event to commemorate the tenth anniversary of our last day at college.

In my opinion the college garden will be the best place for this celebration. I was thinking to invite our entire class and our teachers as well. It will be an open air celebration, as weather in Lahore is very nice these days.

I think it would be a wonderful college reunion. As everyone has been very busy in their lives, this will provide an excellent opportunity to catch up. Moreover, I spoke to Amna and Mahrukh, and got to know that they're also coming to Pakistan this week. So, it'll be logistically feasible for all of us to get together, but we need to check for the availability of our teachers and other class fellows. I have already made a whatsapp group to coordinate with them.

I would be requiring a little favour from you. Since you had very good terms with the college administration, could you check for the availability of the main garden where we can organise the event? This would be a great help.

Hope to see you soon.

Your friend,

Sara

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, earning a solid score. You have clearly stated the kind of celebration event you want to organise (a ten-year college anniversary reunion in the college garden) and explained why this is a good idea by highlighting the opportunity to catch up and the convenient timing due to friends visiting Pakistan. Furthermore, you have described the specific help needed from your friend regarding checking the availability of the main garden with the college administration. While all bullet points are covered, some ideas, such as the logistics of gathering everyone, could be slightly more extended to reach the next level. The tone is appropriately semi-formal and friendly throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter shows a clear and coherent overall arrangement. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving naturally from the opening pleasantries to the event proposal, the reasons for it, and finally the request for help. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the location details, the reunion rationale, and the favour you are asking. Cohesive devices like 'Moreover', 'So', and 'Since' are employed to link your thoughts, although referencing occasionally feels slightly mechanical rather than entirely seamless. To push into higher bands, ensure smoother transitions between sentences and more sophisticated paragraph flow without relying on basic connective phrases.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and phrasing such as 'commemorate', 'logistically feasible', and 'college administration'. Your word choices generally communicate your message clearly, though there is a minor spelling slip in the first paragraph ('organsing' instead of 'organising'). The vocabulary used is sufficient for a semi-formal letter, but to achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of natural, less common lexical items to express your ideas with greater nuance and precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The writing features a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a decent grasp of sentence structures. You have successfully used conditional and modal structures, such as 'It will be an open air celebration' and 'could you check for the availability'. There are some minor errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('as weather in Lahore' instead of 'as the weather') and a minor typo with double spacing ('it'll be logistically'), but these errors rarely impede communication and do not cause misunderstanding. To reach the next level, aim for a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and tighter punctuation control.
