Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Joban,

I hope this letter finds you in the best of your health. I am excited to inform you that I'm organizing a get together as we complete 10 years of graduation. All our friends and classmates are invited.

I want the celebrations to be simple yet enjoyable. I am planning to play some games, a dance competetion, making a slideshow of old pictures of all classmates with a suiable nostalagic songs, and atlast bbq in the backyard.

Best thing about this kind of celebration is having the old batchmates together will let us flow into past memories. Infact, we will share old stories irrespective of work stress, will induce happiness and feeling of satisfaction.

I will need your help regarding arranging the some decoration items and some speakers for the music. Moreover, I have already booked the airbnb where we will have the party.

So excited to see you.

With love,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, earning a solid rating. You clearly state the kind of celebration event you would like to organise, including games, a dance competition, a slideshow, and a barbecue. Furthermore, you explain why this type of celebration would be good by highlighting how it helps reconnect with batchmates and escape work stress, and you describe the help needed regarding decorations and music speakers. The ideas are extended and supported well throughout the letter, presenting a clear purpose and maintaining an appropriate, friendly tone from start to finish. To reach the next level, some of the bullet points, such as the description of the event activities, could be slightly more expanded with additional descriptive details to ensure every single part of the prompt is fully elaborated.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening greeting to the final sign-off. You use paragraphing appropriately to separate distinct points, such as introducing the event in the first paragraph, detailing the activities in the second, explaining the benefits in the third, and outlining the requested help in the fourth. Cohesive devices and referencing are handled reasonably well, ensuring that the reader can easily follow your thoughts about planning the anniversary party. To push further into higher bands, you could employ a more sophisticated variety of transition words and ensure that referencing between sentences is even smoother, avoiding minor structural transitions like starting with 'So' and 'Infact' in a slightly more formal context.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message about planning a college reunion. You attempt some less common vocabulary items such as 'nostalagic' and 'batchmates', although there are noticeable spelling errors and word choice slips present in the text. Specifically, 'competetion', 'suiable', 'nostalagic', and 'atlast' contain spelling inaccuracies, and phrases like 'organizing a get together as we complete 10 years' or 'arranging the some decoration items' show minor issues with collocation and prepositions. To achieve a higher score, you need to expand your range of precise vocabulary and eliminate spelling mistakes, ensuring that less common lexical items are used accurately and naturally without distracting the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, providing a reasonable grammatical foundation. You successfully construct sentences with subordinate clauses and varied structures, such as 'I am planning to play some games... and atlast bbq in the backyard.' There are some errors in grammar, such as missing articles ('arranging the some decoration items') and slight awkwardness in phrasing like 'in the best of your health', but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear throughout. To move towards higher bands, you should aim to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over articles, determiners, and punctuation within your grammatical patterns.
