Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Joban,

I hope this letter finds you in the best of health. I am excited to inform you that I'm organizing a get-together as we complete 10 years of graduation. All our friends and classmates are invited.

I want the celebrations to be simple yet enjoyable. I am planning to play some games, hold a dance competition, make a slideshow of old pictures of all classmates with suitable nostalgic songs, and at last have a BBQ in the backyard. The best thing about this kind of celebration is having our old batchmates together, which will let us flow into past memories. In fact, sharing old stories irrespective of work stress will induce happiness and a feeling of satisfaction.

I will need your help regarding arranging some decoration items and some speakers for the music. Moreover, I have already booked the Airbnb where we will have the party. So excited to see you.

With love,

Amitoz Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all parts of the prompt by explaining the nature of the celebration event, providing reasons why a casual gathering and a slideshow would be ideal, and outlining the specific help needed for decorations and music. Your response presents a clear and consistent purpose throughout the letter, and the ideas are adequately extended and supported. For example, you elaborated well on how sharing old stories and playing nostalgic songs would help everyone reconnect and relieve work stress. To reach an even higher standard, you could have provided slightly more vivid details about the specific games or the timeline of the evening to ensure all your points are fully developed without any trace of over-generalisation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening greeting and announcement of the reunion, through the event details and reasons, to the concluding request for help and sign-off. You used cohesive devices suitably, such as 'Moreover', 'at last', and 'In fact', which helped guide the reader smoothly through your thoughts. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct themes, such as the event description in the second paragraph and the logistics in the final paragraph. To push towards a higher band, you could aim for even greater flexibility in your referencing and transition words, ensuring that every connection between sentences feels entirely natural and unobtrusive.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with adequate precision, incorporating relevant expressions such as 'get-together', 'nostalgic songs', 'batchmates', and 'work stress'. You made successful attempts at less common vocabulary items, demonstrating an awareness of appropriate style for a semi-formal letter to a friend. However, there are a few minor slips in word choice and phrasing, such as writing 'we complete 10 years of graduation' instead of a more natural collocation like 'we celebrate the tenth anniversary of our graduation'. Improving your precision with collocations and expanding your use of less common idiomatic phrases will help you achieve a higher standard in future writing tasks.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You demonstrated good control over a variety of sentence structures, successfully combining simple sentences with complex forms like 'The best thing about this kind of celebration is having our old batchmates together, which will let us flow into past memories.' Your letter contains a high proportion of error-free sentences, and you managed verb tenses and prepositions quite well overall. Punctuation is generally accurate, aiding the reader's understanding. To reach the highest brackets, you should continue working on eliminating minor grammatical inconsistencies and strive for an even wider range of sophisticated, error-free complex syntactic structures throughout your writing.
