Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Lovepreet,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing to you regarding a event I was thinking to organize at five- star hotel Noor Mehal. Actually, I was watching a movie yesterday, which was about a reunion of friends after a long time. Once the movie ended an idea came into my mind that we can also organize a reunion event since, its long time our classmates did not get chance to meet each other. In recent years, there has been a growing trend towards the reunion so, I might need your assistance to make it real. In addition, Rohit who was the class topper, his birthday also coming next month. I believe that, it is a nice opportunity to celebrate his precious day all together.

Firstly, I would love to make a list of our batchmates, then we will send them invitation a month before the event. Could you please assist me to get their contact details as soon as possible.

I look forward to hearing from you promptly, as we can discuss everything and Please do not hesitate if you would like to make any changes.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Your love

Rajvir

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering the type of celebration event, the reasons for choosing it, and the help needed. However, some parts are more fully developed than others. For instance, the choice of a five-star hotel event and combining it with Rohit's birthday is mentioned, but the explanation regarding why it would be good to celebrate in this way is somewhat limited and relies on a simple narrative about watching a movie. Similarly, the specific help required is somewhat restricted to gathering contact details. To reach a higher band, all aspects of the prompt would need to be extended with fully supported and well-developed ideas throughout the entire letter, providing deeper context and clearer purpose.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and a generally clear purpose throughout. The writer uses standard opening and closing conventions, and paragraphs are used to separate the main points, such as the introduction and the specific request for help. However, cohesion is at times a bit mechanical or faulty. For example, transitional phrases like 'Firstly' are introduced, but the corresponding sequence lacks a smooth progression, and referencing in sentences like 'Rohit who was the class topper, his birthday also coming next month' lacks seamless connection. To improve cohesion, the writer should ensure that cohesive devices link ideas more naturally and that referencing is grammatically integrated without abrupt shifts between thoughts.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

An adequate range of vocabulary is employed for the task, allowing the writer to successfully communicate their ideas about organizing a reunion. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as 'growing trend' and 'precious day'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors, such as writing 'regarding a event' instead of 'an event', and 'since, its long time our classmates did not get chance' where phrasing is slightly unnatural. Spelling and word formation are generally clear enough that they do not impede communication, but to move up to a higher band, the vocabulary choices need to be more precise and consistently natural in style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating that the writer can handle various structures. Examples include subordinate clauses like 'which was about a reunion of friends' and 'as we can discuss everything'. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues scattered throughout, such as missing articles ('a event' instead of 'an event'), tense tracking issues ('was thinking to organize' instead of 'was thinking of organizing'), and awkward punctuation like unnecessary commas ('I believe that, it is a nice opportunity'). While these errors do not impede overall communication, their persistent presence across different sentence patterns keeps the grammatical accuracy at this level. More careful proofreading of prepositions and articles would greatly enhance control.
