Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Samarth,

I hope you're doing excellent. I'm excited to announce that I'm finally going to start my own business in the pizza restaurant. Since it's been a decade after passing out from the college, and on this auspicious day, I'd like to organise a party at my store with our fellow classmates and friends.

I'd would like to celebrate the inauguration in the presence of my loved ones! As this is going to be the first business startup for me, so I wish this could be a good memorable day.

Not only a memorable day! I'd like to serve the pizza to everyone present there and would like to know about the taste level and what changes needs to be done to improve the quality.

To manage the event, I'd like to ask you a small help of creating a group on What'sapp and post an invitation pole on the group.

I'm so excited to see you all!

Take care,

Harsh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, successfully covering the ten-year college anniversary context, the type of event, the reason for celebrating, and the help needed from your friend. However, the response sits at this level because some ideas are partially confused or under-developed. For example, while you mention organising an event to celebrate the anniversary with friends, you blend this with the inauguration of your new pizza restaurant, making the primary purpose of the gathering slightly blurred. Furthermore, the explanation regarding the taste test is a bit limited in development. To reach a higher band, you should ensure all bullet points are fully expanded with clear, focused explanations that directly target the core instruction without introducing competing secondary purposes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement, and your ideas are easy to follow from the opening greeting to the final sign-off. You use paragraphs to structure your points, such as separating the introduction, the event details, and the request for help. However, the cohesion between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. For instance, phrases like 'Not only a memorable day!' create a disjointed flow compared to more naturally integrated complex sentences. Referencing is generally clear, but smoother transitional devices would improve the overall logical progression. To achieve a higher band, you should work on connecting your sentences more fluidly and ensuring that cohesive devices are used naturally to link your thoughts together without abrupt shifts.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional phrases like 'auspicious day', 'inauguration', and 'fellow classmates'. You attempt less common lexical items, although there are some word-choice and collocation errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'doing excellent' instead of 'doing excellently' or 'doing very well', and 'start my own business in the pizza restaurant'. Additionally, 'invitation pole' contains a spelling error for 'poll'. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight limitations in precision and word formation. To improve, focus on mastering natural collocations and checking spelling carefully, such as using 'poll' instead of 'pole'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using structures like conditional and introductory clauses, such as 'Since it's been a decade after passing out from the college...'. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including tense and preposition issues like 'after passing out from the college' (instead of 'since we graduated from college') and the redundant auxiliary in 'I'd would like to celebrate'. Additionally, the sentence 'As this is going to be the first business startup for me, so I wish this could be a good memorable day' combines 'As' and 'so' incorrectly. These errors mean the control over grammar is somewhat inconsistent. To reach a higher band, aim for greater accuracy in complex sentence patterns and eliminate repetitive error types.
