IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Ravi,
Hello how're you? I was planning to organize a party for all our college friends since it's been a very long time we get together.
I'm in favour of organising a pool party and there is great location in Mississauga for this kind of celebration. There will be a DJ music as well along with sitting arrangements around the pool. What do you think about it?
Since we all classmates used to enjoy beach parties, so I think this place would be a best match to recall our college time memmories. At the same time, we all friends are busy in our lives, so this is the best way to re-unite and celebrate 10 yeras of friendship.
Can you come to my house next week? I might need your help to contact all of our classmates and send invitations to all of them. Since you are good at bargaining, that would be best if you can talk to the hotel manager for some discounts for the event payment.
See you soon at my home!
Love,
Balwinder.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You successfully addressed all parts of the letter's prompt, covering the kind of event, the reason for choosing it, and the specific help required with organizing it. Your tone is appropriately friendly and conversational for a letter to a college friend. However, the response sits at a middle band because some ideas, such as the details about the pool party location and the specific arrangements, are slightly underdeveloped and could have been expanded further to fully satisfy higher descriptor requirements. Overall, you met all the bullet points clearly, though parts of your explanation regarding the reunion lacked depth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement, and your ideas are organized into logical paragraphs that each serve a distinct purpose in the letter. You used some basic cohesive devices, such as 'since', 'at the same time', and 'so', to connect your thoughts. However, the cohesion sometimes feels a bit mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is not always completely smooth, as seen with transitions between sentences. To reach a higher level, you could employ a more diverse and flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure smoother progression between your ideas throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You used an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message about organizing a college reunion. You made some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 're-unite', 'bargaining', and 'celebrate'. However, there are noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors, such as 'memmories' instead of memories, and 'yeras' instead of years, along with slightly unnatural word choices like 'a great location' instead of an ideal location. These errors do not impede communication, but they reflect a limited and developing lexical range that prevents a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrated a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional clauses and infinitives. There are some errors in grammar and sentence patterns, such as 'it's been a very long time we get together' instead of since we got together, and 'that would be best if you can talk' instead of it would be best. Punctuation and verb tense consistency also show minor lapses. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing your meaning to remain clear to the reader throughout the letter.
