Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sashi,

Hey! Jahanvi here. I hope you are doing well. It has been ten years since I left college, and we didn't get a chance to meet each other. For that reason, I would like to arrange a party this Sunday to celebrate this occasion on our 10th anniversary since we left the university.

I will organize an event at a restaurant which is quite near our university, where we have great memories of our college life. I will invite all our friends so we can have a get-together, which will be a refreshing event for all of us after our hectic schedules.

I would like to ask for help regarding the menu selection for this event. I am extremely happy if you could make some time to choose food items for this event.

See you soon.

Bye,

Jahanvi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by stating the kind of celebration event, explaining why it would be good, and describing the required help. However, some bullet points are under-developed rather than fully extended, which is characteristic of this level. For instance, the explanation of why the restaurant near the university is good mentions memories and a refreshing break, but these ideas remain basic without further elaboration. Furthermore, it must be noted that the response falls short of the minimum length requirement, containing 140 words instead of the required 150 words. To achieve a higher band, you should expand upon your ideas with more supporting details and ensure the word count requirement is fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter maintains a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You successfully sequence your ideas, starting with a friendly greeting and the purpose of the letter, moving on to the specific event details and reasons, and concluding with a request for help and a natural sign-off. Cohesive devices are used adequately and logically, such as 'For that reason,' 'where we have,' and 'which will be.' Paragraphing is also used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, event plans, and help request into distinct blocks. While referencing and paragraphing are well-managed, bringing in a wider variety of sophisticated transition signals would help lift this criterion even further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message without difficulty. You attempt some less common vocabulary items, such as 'hectic schedules' and 'menu selection,' demonstrating a reasonable range. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as 'celebrate this occasion on our 10th anniversary since we left,' which feels slightly repetitive and unnatural. Spelling and word forms are generally accurate and do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and precise expressions consistently throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a solid foundation in grammar. You successfully handle relative clauses, such as 'a restaurant which is quite near our university' and 'a get-together, which will be a refreshing event.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, for instance, the tense shift and phrasing in 'we didn't get a chance to meet each other' compared to the context of a ten-year gap, as well as the awkward prepositional phrasing in 'happy if you could make some time.' Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and there are plenty of error-free sentences. To improve, you should incorporate a wider variety of advanced grammatical structures while polishing accuracy.
