IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Zain,
I am hale and hearty and I hope you are also sailing in the same boat. I thought to remind you that it has been a decade since we all left college so in that case I am planning to celebrate this ten year anniversary with all our batch mates.
I have a plan to organise a rooftop barbeque party in a hotel next to the cinema in Highway street. I can arrange food and seatings for around fifty five people. I am also thinking to add a photo booth and set up few projector screens to play video games. We can then conclude the event by cutting a customised cake with our batch picture on it.
I believe hosting such an amazing event for my old friends will make memories that will last forever. In this huge event, we will click enough pictures to look back and enjoy flashbacks of this get-together.
I just need a favour from you as well in setting up all this event. I will not be able to handle such huge arrangements on my own solely. Thats why I request you to come and join me a day before the event and don't forget to bring your new DSLR camera with you.
See you soon and we will have a great time,
Yours affectionately,
Muzdalfa Zain

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, addressing the celebration event, the reasons for choosing it, and the specific help needed from the friend. For instance, the writer outlines a rooftop barbecue party with a photo booth and video games, explains that this will help create lasting memories through photographs, and requests help with setup alongside a DSLR camera. However, some aspects are slightly under-developed, such as the reason for the celebration style, which relies on a somewhat repetitive explanation about taking pictures. Overall, the tone is appropriately informal and friendly, fulfilling the requirements of a general letter while leaving some ideas needing further extension.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established in the opening paragraph and distinct paragraphs dedicated to the event details, reasons, and requests for help. Information is logically sequenced so the reader can easily follow the progression from the initial idea to the specific plans and needed assistance. However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or basic, relying on simple connectors like 'In this huge event' and 'Thats why'. To reach higher levels, the transitions between sentences could be smoother and referencing could be managed with greater flexibility, though the current layout provides a clear structure appropriate for the middle bands.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the message without impeding communication. The writer attempts some less common expressions, such as 'rooftop barbeque party', 'customised cake', and 'flashbacks'. However, there are instances of overly informal or clichéd idioms, such as 'hale and hearty' and 'sailing in the same boat', which feel slightly dated or unnatural in modern correspondence. Additionally, minor slips in word choice and spelling occur, such as writing 'Thats' without an apostrophe. A wider, more natural control of less common lexical items with precise collocation is needed to progress further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'I am planning to celebrate...' and 'I will not be able to handle...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing apostrophes in contractions like 'Thats' and minor awkwardness in prepositional phrases like 'in setting up all this event' instead of 'with setting up'. Nonetheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily grasp the meaning. To achieve a higher band, the response would need to feature a wider variety of error-free complex structures used with greater consistency.
