Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Gurpreet,

I hope you are doing well . Its hard to believe that its already been 10 years since we gratuated from college. I am writing this letter to inform you that I am planning to celebrate my anniversary with school and college friends.

I am going to organse a reunion dinner with all my lovely friends at nice restaurant with having different informal activities such as quiz games regarding our old memories , showing photographs in school uniform as well as farewell memories . I think it would be the best reason to bring everyone together after a long time.

I believe celebrating this way will be more enjoyable because we lost touch with many friends after leaving college or school . A reunion is great idea to meet as well as we can discuss about our life with each other and remember the fun time we spended together.

I had really appreciate your help with the organsiation . I need one more favour from your side if you can connect with old friends and figure out how many will be joining this party. We can create group and discuss about organisation , date , food and many more things.

I am glad to see you again and will create unforgettable memories

Best regards

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, earning a solid score in this area. You clearly state the kind of celebration event you want to organise, which is a reunion dinner with informal activities like quiz games and old photographs. You also explain why this is a good idea, mentioning that it helps reconnect people after losing touch and allows everyone to share life updates and cherished memories. Furthermore, you successfully describe the help you need by asking Gurpreet to connect with old friends and estimate attendance. The ideas are extended and supported well throughout the letter, presenting a clear purpose and position from start to finish. To push towards a higher band, you could develop your ideas even further by adding specific examples of past college memories or more elaborate details about the restaurant setting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and flows reasonably well, meeting the criteria for a well-structured informal message. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving logically from the initial greeting and purpose of the letter to the details of the event, the reasons for celebrating, and finally the request for help. Paragraphing is used to separate distinct points, which helps the reader follow your thoughts easily. However, cohesion sometimes feels slightly mechanical, particularly with transitional phrases and referencing. To achieve a higher band, you would need to employ cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that pronoun references are entirely clear throughout all paragraphs, avoiding occasional abrupt transitions between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message, but it shows some limitations. You make several spelling errors, such as 'gratuated' instead of graduated, 'organse' and 'organsiation' instead of organise and organisation, and 'spended' instead of spent. There are also minor lexical awkwardnesses, such as 'at nice restaurant' missing an article and 'celebrate my anniversary' when referring to a college reunion rather than a personal anniversary. While you attempt some less common vocabulary, these inaccuracies prevent you from reaching a higher band. To improve, you should focus on accurate word forms, correct spelling, and more precise collocations regarding social events and gatherings.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and compound sentences to communicate your ideas. There are some grammar and punctuation errors present, such as missing apostrophes in 'Its', spacing issues around punctuation marks, and prepositional inconsistencies like 'help with the organsiation'. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. To move up to a higher band, you would need to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences, demonstrate more consistent control over articles and punctuation, and refine complex structures to ensure greater overall accuracy.
