Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mahesh,
i jope you are doing well. It is hard to believe that it has already been ten years since we graduated from college. I am writing to you because I would like to organise a reunion to celebrate this special anniversary with all our old friends and classmates.
I am thinking of arranging a dinner and informal get-together at a nice restaurant near our college. we could begin with some refreshment, followed by dinner, music and a few fun activities. I would also like to prepare a slideshow of our old college photographs and memories. I think this would be a wonderful way to celebrate because it would give everyone an opportunity to meet after many years, remember our college days and share our recent experiences.
I would really appreciate your help with organising the event. could you please contact our former classmates and find out who would be interested in attending? It would also be helpful if you could collect their phone numbers and email addresses and help me decide on a suitable date.
I hope you can help me with this. I am really looking forward to seeing everyone again.
Best regards,
Latika

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
Your response covers all parts of the task very well and fulfills the purpose of the letter effectively. You successfully mention the kind of celebration event you would like to organise, explaining clearly that a dinner, informal get-together, and a slideshow of old photographs at a restaurant near the college would be ideal because it allows everyone to reconnect and share recent experiences. Furthermore, you effectively describe the help you need by asking your friend to contact former classmates, collect their contact details, and help decide on a date. All bullet points are well-developed with appropriate detail and an engaging tone suited to a friendly letter, resulting in a strong and fully accomplished response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0
Your letter demonstrates a logical overall organisation where ideas are clearly sequenced and easy to follow. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the opening greeting and purpose of writing in the first paragraph, to the details of the event and reasons for choosing it in the second, and finally to the specific request for help in the third. You use appropriate referencing and cohesive devices, such as 'I am thinking of arranging', 'I would also like to', and 'It would also be helpful', which tie the thoughts together naturally. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional and natural phrasing to communicate your ideas. Words and phrases like 'reunion', 'informal get-together', 'refreshment', and 'former classmates' show a good command of everyday and semi-formal language suitable for this letter type. However, there are some minor mechanical and word choice issues, such as the lowercase 'i' at the start of 'i jope' in the opening sentence, and a typographical slip with 'jope' instead of 'hope'. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of less common lexical items and idiomatic phrases with greater precision, while ensuring flawless spelling and punctuation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You display a good control of grammar and punctuation, using a comfortable mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Your letter includes well-formed complex sentences featuring relative and subordinate clauses, such as 'It is hard to believe that it has already been ten years since we graduated from college' and 'I think this would be a wonderful way to celebrate because it would give everyone an opportunity to meet'. Verb forms and tenses are handled accurately across past, present, and conditional structures. While there are a few minor mechanical errors such as starting sentences with lowercase letters ('we could begin' and 'could you please'), the majority of your sentences are error-free and communication is never impeded.
