Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mehfuz,
I am writing this letter to invite you for the reunion of all the college friends next month here in Surat. It has been a decade of our friendship and it would be wonderful if we could get together under one roof and celebrate the auspicious day.
Firstly, the venue will be Rajshree hall, which I have booked in advance and it will be on sunday so everyone can join without any hesitation. We are planning to do some fun activites like cultual program followed by dance and dinner. We have also invited famous band to perform for us.
I believe that it is very important to make this event memorable and for that reason we are not going to do usual things instead, we all will be participating to cherish these moments and relive our good old days.
Although everything is sorted, I need you help in catering. If you could share number of any catering company which serves delicious food. It will be great. Hope to hear from you soon.
Kind regards

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your letter successfully covers all the bullet points required in the prompt. You mentioned the kind of celebration event you would like to organise, explaining that it will be a reunion with cultural programmes, a band, and dinner at Rajshree hall. You also provided clear reasons why this celebration would be good, noting that it will help everyone relive old days and avoid routine activities. Additionally, you described the help you need by asking for a catering company recommendation. However, your response sits at this level because some of your ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the explanation of why this celebration format is beneficial could have been expanded with more specific examples. All parts of the task are addressed, but further depth in supporting your ideas would be needed to reach a higher level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement and a logical structure that makes it easy to follow. You begin with an appropriate greeting, move through the purpose of the letter and the event details, and finish with a clear request for help and a sign-off. Paragraphing is used to separate different points, such as the venue details in one paragraph and the request for catering help in another. Nevertheless, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical or faulty. For instance, the transition between sentences could flow more smoothly with more varied and natural cohesive devices rather than relying on basic connectors like 'Firstly' and 'Although'. Referencing is generally clear, but improving the integration of your ideas will help create a more seamless progression throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message about organising a college reunion. You attempt less common lexical items such as 'auspicious', 'celebration', and 'reunion'. However, there are some word choice and spelling errors that prevent a higher score. For example, you wrote 'activites' instead of 'activities' and 'cultual' instead of 'cultural', and the phrase 'invite you for' would be more natural as 'invite you to'. Additionally, the phrase 'do usual things' is slightly informal and could be upgraded. These minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, but eliminating them and using a wider variety of precise collocations would elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to combine clauses using words like 'and', 'because', and 'if'. You have good control over basic structures and successfully use the present and future tenses, such as 'I am writing this letter' and 'the venue will be'. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation that prevent this criterion from reaching the next level. For example, there is a missing article in 'invite you for the reunion of all the college friends', a spelling-related punctuation issue in 'sunday' (which should be capitalised), and a missing preposition or determiner in 'need you help in catering' (which should be 'need your help with catering'). These errors rarely impede communication, but more consistent accuracy across complex structures is needed for a higher band.
