Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, successfully covering the ten-year anniversary context, the type of celebration, the reasons for it, and the specific help needed from the friend. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others. For example, while the description of the carnival event and the reasons for socialising are relevant, the request for help is slightly bundled together with practical tasks like making a WhatsApp group and writing to the HOD, leaving certain points feeling a bit rushed or under-developed. Nevertheless, the tone is appropriately informal and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout, which aligns well with the requirements for this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning and ending, greeting Satyam appropriately and signing off with Mitali. Paragraphing is attempted to separate the different bullet points, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, cohesion at the sentence level is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Run-on sentences and comma splices appear frequently, such as 'I hope you are doing well, I m writing this letter to because...', which disrupts the smooth flow. Furthermore, referencing is not always clear, making connections between clauses occasionally strained, though the overarching message remains understandable.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary to complete the task, successfully attempting less common items and emotive language such as 'nostalgic', 'mischievious', and 'ubiquitous'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and spelling that reflect this level. Words like 'almuni' (alumni) are misspelled, and phrases like 'inculcate each other problems' demonstrate inappropriate collocations and word forms. Despite these errors, the lexical items attempted do not severely impede communication, and the friendly tone of the letter is maintained throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and tense control. Issues include tense shifts and auxiliary verb errors such as 'it been a decade we not met' and 'I still be nostalgic'. Punctuation is weak, characterised by run-on sentences lacking proper periods or conjunctions. While these errors occur regularly across the text, they rarely impede overall communication, though they require the reader to occasionally decode the intended meaning behind the flawed sentence structures.
