Student answer (Band 6.0)

Hi Jan,

How are you? It's been a while since I have heard from you. I really hope you are doing well. I am writing regarding the10th anniversiary of my graduation this year, and I was thinking about celebrating it with all of our friends and classmates from college.

Since it is the 10th annversiary, I was considering having a huge party. I know a very fancy hotel near my work which have a spacious hall with a stand for a muscial band, which we can use to bring our favourite musical band during college " pop stars ", nontheless, the catering service there is really perfect and there is availability for book an accommodation if anyone like to spend the night at the hotel.

The major reason why I thought about all of that, that we haven't seen each other for years. and I believe it will be a great reunion party that we all could catch up and spend good time toghther. and having this party at that hotel will guarantee us spending really good time. As they really professionals.

I would appreciate it if you could help me organizing the party. If you have some free time I would appreciate writing a list with all names, phone numbers, and emails of our friends and classmates so I could invite them easily. Moreover, if you have the contact number of " pop star " band, I would really appreciate sending it to me so I could make a reservation.

Thanks in advance.

Hope to hear from you soon

your friend

Diana

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully cover all parts of the task, meeting the lower band requirement fully and showing touches of higher-level development. You clearly state the kind of celebration event you wish to organise, suggesting a hotel party with a live band. You also explain why this is a good idea, mentioning the reunion aspect and the quality of the venue, and you describe the specific help you need from Jan, such as gathering contact lists and phone numbers. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed rather than fully extended, such as the details regarding the hotel services. To reach a higher level, you could expand further on why this particular hotel setting creates the best atmosphere for catching up after a decade apart.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical sequence from greeting to stating the purpose, describing the plan, asking for help, and signing off. You use basic cohesive devices to connect your points, such as "Since it is", "Moreover", and "Thanks in advance". However, referencing and paragraphing can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or choppy, as seen in the third paragraph where sentences like "The major reason why I thought about all of that, that we haven't seen each other for years." lack smooth integration. To improve further, ensure that your transitions flow more naturally and that your referencing links ideas seamlessly without abrupt pauses or punctuation breaks.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common words and phrases such as "spacious hall", "catering service", and "reunion party". Communication is generally clear despite a few spelling and word-choice errors that do not impede understanding, such as "anniversiary" instead of anniversary, "nontheless" instead of nonetheless, and "availability for book" instead of availability to book. To reach the next level, focus on eliminating spelling slips and using more precise collocations, ensuring that less common lexical items are employed with greater accuracy and stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout your letter, handling structures like "I would appreciate it if you could help me organizing the party." with reasonable success. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ("bring our favourite musical band during college ' pop stars '"), prepositional pattern issues ("help me organizing" instead of help me to organise or organise), and minor agreement mistakes like "a very fancy hotel... which have" instead of has. These errors persist but rarely impede communication, placing your control comfortably in the mid-range where simple structures are handled well while attempts at complex patterns bring occasional slips.
