Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Darshan,
I hope everything is going well for you and your family. I am incredibly excited to reaching out today after almost a decade. I am planning to organise a reunion for all our old classmates. I am thinking to arrange a dinner at restuarant, followed by some music and games, perhaps on a Satuarday evening in December. we could also put a slideshow of our old photos.
I think this is great opportunity and great way to celebrate in this way since we all have gone in different direction after left the college. Ten years is a real milestone, so this is a big event and wonderful to catch this moment.
I was wondering if you could help to arrange this all. I know you have big collection of our photos so if you don't mind me asking to arrange big display screen and prepare slideshow and I'll take care of dinner, music and games. I have great taste in food so I have couple of restuarant in mind.
Thanks a lot for your help. Catch you soon!
Best Regards,
Varshil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, earning a solid score in this area. You clearly state the kind of celebration event you wish to organise, suggesting a dinner at a restaurant followed by music, games, and a photo slideshow on a Saturday evening in December. You also explain why this is a good way to celebrate, noting that ten years is a major milestone and that friends have gone in different directions since leaving college. Furthermore, you describe the help you need by asking your friend Darshan to arrange a display screen and prepare a slideshow from his collection of old photos. While all bullet points are addressed, some ideas show a slight lack of full development—for example, the explanation of why a restaurant dinner is ideal could be expanded further. To reach the next level, you need to extend all your main points with slightly richer detail and justification.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The structure of the letter flows naturally from an affectionate opening and the announcement of the reunion to the explanation of the event, your request for help, and a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics, such as the event details in the first paragraph, the rationale in the second paragraph, and the specific request for help in the third paragraph. You use cohesive devices effectively to connect your ideas, such as 'I think this is great opportunity', 'Ten years is a real milestone', and 'I was wondering if you could help'. Referencing is generally clear, allowing the reader to follow your thoughts without confusion. To move even higher, you could incorporate a wider variety of more sophisticated cohesive links between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing enough range to communicate your message clearly. You attempt some less common vocabulary and phrases, such as 'milestone', 'reunion', and 'slideshow'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'restuarant' instead of 'restaurant', 'Satuarday' instead of 'Saturday', and 'reaching out' following 'excited to' instead of 'excited to reach'. Phrases like 'catch this moment' are slightly unnatural in this context, and there are minor slip-ups in prepositions or word forms, such as 'gone in different direction after left the college'. These errors do not impede communication, but they restrict your score. To achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate greater precision in word choice, better control over collocations, and completely error-free spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms in your letter, such as using subordinate clauses introduced by 'since' and 'if'. There are some grammatical errors and punctuation issues present, such as the incorrect infinitive construction 'excited to reaching out' instead of 'excited to reach out', the missing article in 'great opportunity' and 'restaurant', and the sentence fragment starting with lowercase 'we could also put'. Additionally, 'after left the college' should be 'after leaving college'. Despite these errors, your sentences remain mostly clear and communication is not impeded. To attain a higher band, you need to produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and show tighter control over verb forms and article usage.
