Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Arun,

How are you? Hope you're doing well. I can't believe it's already been ten years since we left college. I am writing to tell you about my opinion regarding an anniversary celebration.

I was thinking to organize a get together party which is include some games, music events, photo show. By the way, an outdoor party would be also a great option since we can enjoy the summer as well.

Since we haven't seen some of our classmates after ten years, this is a better chance to have a fun with them and share memories. Not only that we can rebuild our bonds and create new freindships with their families.

I really appreciate if you could help me to find contact details of our classmates. All members should be informed regarding the event, then we can get their help as well for some of our works.

Let me knkw what you think about my seggession and hope to hear you soon.

Kind regards,

Rasangi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your response addresses all parts of the task, meeting the lower requirements well while touching upon aspects of the higher band. You successfully state the kind of celebration event you would like to organise, mentioning 'an outdoor party' with games, music events, and a photo show. You also explain why this celebration is beneficial, noting that it is a great chance to 'have a fun with them and share memories' and rebuild bonds. Furthermore, you describe the specific help you need by asking your friend 'to find contact details of our classmates.' However, some of your ideas are slightly under-developed rather than fully extended, which keeps the response at this level. To reach a higher standard, you could have expanded further on why an outdoor setting specifically suits the group or provided more details on how family members would be included in the new friendships.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter shows a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure appropriate for a personal correspondence. You use clear paragraphing, starting with a friendly opening, moving through your proposals and reasons, and concluding with a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices are generally used, such as 'Since' and 'Not only that', which help link your ideas together. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical or referencing is not always completely smooth, as seen in phrases like 'then we can get their help as well for some of our works.' To achieve a stronger flow, you could improve the transitions between sentences and ensure referencing pronouns like 'their' and 'them' are always unmistakably clear. Continuing to vary your cohesive devices naturally will help elevate your organizational skills further.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message about organizing a college reunion. You attempt less common vocabulary items and phrases, such as 'anniversary celebration', 'rebuild our bonds', and 'contact details'. However, there are noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'organize a get together party which is include', 'have a fun', 'freindships', 'seggession', and 'Let me knkw'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they highlight a need for greater precision. To improve, focus on mastering common collocations like 'have fun' without the article, ensuring correct word forms, and carefully proofreading your spelling for words like 'suggestion' and 'know'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms throughout your letter, utilizing various structures such as conditional and subordinate clauses like 'Since we haven't seen some of our classmates after ten years...' and 'I really appreciate if you could help me...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including tense and preposition slips such as 'I was thinking to organize' instead of 'I was thinking of organizing', and minor awkwardness in phrasing like 'hear you soon' instead of 'hear from you soon'. Nonetheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to easily understand your meaning. To reach the next level, aim for greater control over complex verb patterns and ensure higher accuracy in prepositions and infinitive versus gerund choices.
