Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear rahul,

How are you doing today, I am orgenise a party to celebrate my 5th anniversry with Tina, where i am planning to invite our all college freinds.

It has been so long time, we did not meet all together. So i made a plan to celebrate my anniversry with all college friends, i know some are got married, so i will invite them as couple.

My main reason is to orgenise this party to remember our old days, how we made the bunks and went for wating movies, speccialy the snack party at gappu tea stall.

I am thinking to get together from long time but i did not get any chance to pursue it. Now finally the is coming and i need to do so many preprations, where i need your help for decoraters and food orgenisers. I know you are working in this field from last 6 years, so i do not think someone can do better then you. Please be on time or try to come early to check the all arrangements.

your besty,

naveen

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the main purpose of the letter, but it only partially covers all requirements of the prompt. While you mention that you want to organise a party to celebrate an anniversary with college friends and briefly state the need for help with decorators and food organisers, some ideas are underdeveloped or confused. For instance, you mention celebrating your 5th anniversary with Tina, yet the prompt specifically asks about celebrating ten years since leaving college with all your friends and classmates. This creates a slight confusion regarding the core context of the event. Furthermore, your explanation of why this celebration would be good focuses mainly on personal nostalgia rather than expanding fully on the benefits of gathering the group. To move towards a higher level, you need to ensure that every bullet point from the prompt is clearly and accurately addressed without blending conflicting scenarios, and you should provide more fully developed explanations for each point.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation in the letter, as you begin with a salutation and separate your thoughts into several paragraphs, moving from the invitation to the reasons and finally asking for help. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical links between sentences are occasionally weak. For example, sentences like 'It has been so long time, we did not meet all together. So i made a plan...' rely on basic and repetitive cohesive devices. Referencing can also be unclear, and punctuation issues disrupt the natural flow of ideas. To improve coherence, you should use a wider variety of transitional phrases to connect your ideas smoothly and ensure that each paragraph has a singular, clearly developed focus that guides the reader naturally through your message.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause some difficulty for the reader. There are several spelling and word-choice mistakes throughout the text, such as 'orgenise' instead of organise, 'anniversry', 'freinds', 'wating movies' instead of watching movies, 'speccialy', 'preprations', and 'decoraters'. Additionally, phrases like 'made the bunks' show an unnatural collocation or incorrect word choice for skipping college classes. To reach a higher standard, you should expand your range of vocabulary, use less common items with greater precision, and pay close attention to accurate spelling and natural collocations suitable for informal correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You demonstrate a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences or attempts at complex sentences that contain frequent errors. There are numerous grammatical inaccuracies, such as tense and verb form errors ('I am orgenise', 'we did not meet all together', 'some are got married', 'the is coming'), missing articles, and comma splices or run-on sentences ('How are you doing today, I am orgenise...'). Prepositions and clause structures also show frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. To improve in this area, you need to work on forming accurate complex sentences, maintain consistent and correct verb tenses, and improve your control over basic punctuation and sentence boundaries.
