Student answer (Band 6.5)

Hello Dalit,

I hope you're doing great. It's been 10 years since we graduate and I am exited to share that I am planning to organise a get-to-gather party with our old friends and spend some quality time.

So, I am thinking to arrange this party in mid-december in Shimla. As many of our friends are already in India, it would be easier for them to be there. There will be lots of fun including music, dance and delicious dinner.

As you know, we all are busy in our life and don't get much time for friends. Therefore, I personally believe, this celebration will turn out in great refreshment and joy in our lives. In fact, we can revisit our memories of college and recall all our beautiful experiences.

Well, I need your suggestions to finalised the villa in that location as you have been there few times. Also, I want you to find good caters and decoraters.

I'm hoping to hear back from you soon and can't wait to see you at the party. Thank you.

Your's lovingly,

Raju.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the task prompt. You clearly explain the kind of celebration event you want to organize, which is a get-together party in Shimla for your college friends. You also provide a good explanation for why celebrating this way would be beneficial, mentioning that it offers refreshment, joy, and a chance to revisit college memories since everyone is busy. Furthermore, you describe the help needed by asking your friend to help finalize a villa and find caterers and decorators. All parts of the prompt are addressed with relevant ideas, though some areas like the event description could be slightly more extended to reach the highest levels. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and fully achieved.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. You begin with an appropriate opening greeting and state your purpose clearly. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the event details and location in the second paragraph, to the reasons for the celebration in the third paragraph, and finally to the specific help needed in the fourth paragraph. You use standard cohesive devices and paragraphing effectively to guide the reader through the letter. Although referencing is mostly clear and logical, a few more advanced transitional phrases would help enhance the flow even further.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly, but it contains several word choice, spelling, and word form errors. For instance, words like 'exited' instead of 'excited', 'get-to-gather' instead of 'get-together', and 'caters' instead of 'caterers' show minor slips in spelling and form. Additionally, phrases like 'busy in our life' could be more natural. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'refreshment' and 'revisit', but occasional inaccuracies in spelling and collocation prevent the vocabulary score from being higher.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'As many of our friends are already in India, it would be easier for them to be there.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as spelling 'december' with a lowercase letter, the tense error 'since we graduate' instead of 'since we graduated', and the incorrect possessive 'Your's lovingly' instead of 'Yours lovingly'. However, these errors are relatively minor and rarely impede communication, allowing your meaning to remain clear to the reader throughout the letter.
