Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Zara,

May this letter finds you in good health. It's been long time, I haven't heard from your side. I hope everything is going well.

I am writing this letter to remind you that our graduation anniversry is coming next month. This time I have a different plan to celebrate this event. I wolud like to invite all our classmates to this special occassion. It will be a great experience to meet old friends and classfellows after such a long time. We will share old memories and time spent together. I still missed those college days so, I wanted to cherish those moments again. I am thinking of organizing this event in a party hall, which is located near your town. I will appreciate if you could help me in advance reservation. Furthermore, I need your help to contact some of our fellows as I have lost many contacts.

I need your support to organize this event in a best possible way. Please let me know about your availability as soon as possible.

I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the prompt, successfully identifying the kind of celebration event, explaining why celebrating in a party hall near Zara's town is a good idea, and describing the specific help needed with the advance reservation and contacting lost fellows. The tone is appropriate for an informal letter to a friend. However, the development of ideas leans towards Band 6 territory because some points, such as sharing old memories, are slightly brief and under-developed, while the transition to the next band is shown through a clear overarching plan that addresses all bullet points in a relevant and purposeful manner.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable progression from opening greetings to the purpose of the letter, specific requests, and a concluding sign-off. Paragraphing is utilized, though grouping the various requests and explanations into tighter thematic units could improve flow. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'Furthermore' and 'This time', but referencing and linking feel somewhat mechanical at times. While the organization is clear enough to guide the reader effortlessly through the text, the occasional abrupt shifts between ideas keep the structural sophistication at a steady level for this band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate everyday social arrangements clearly. There are attempts to use less common items and appropriate topic-specific vocabulary such as 'graduation', 'celebrate', and 'reservation'. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors occur throughout the text, including 'anniversry', 'wolud', 'occassion', and 'classfellows'. While these errors do not impede overall communication and the reader can easily follow the message, the presence of these slips prevents the vocabulary from reaching a higher level of precision and stylistic control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses ('which is located near your town') and conditional intents. There are several grammatical errors present, such as tense and agreement issues in 'May this letter finds you' and 'It's been long time, I haven't heard', alongside missing articles like 'in a best possible way'. These errors in grammar and punctuation occur across the text but rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the intended meaning despite the mechanical lapses in verb forms and prepositions.
