It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Hey John,

I hope this letter finds you in good health. It's long time, we have not seen each other, except few messages occasionally on social media platforms.

Anyways, while taking few days off from my hectic routine, a thought of reunion of our collegemates hit my mind. Persuing it, i decided to organise one beach party, and everyone among our college badge is hearty welcomed. The foremost reason of choosing this venue for the party is to avoid disruption for locals, if we oraganise that event in somewhere near to residential area, because i am planning to hire local musical band for that night as well as there would be BBQ arrangements too. So i am expecting petty noise over there.

I would love to refreash our old days, we spent together during college days and the memories we created in that era.

Unfortunately, i am not in contact of all of our friends. I would invite them myself who are in my contact. Why do not you give me the details of those whom you are in contact with or invite them. That would be a great help.

I am waiting to see you guys with zeal and zest.

Regards,

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by explaining the type of celebration, the reasons for choosing a beach party, and requesting specific help with contacts. However, some bullet points are more fully developed than others. For instance, the explanation of the venue choice includes good detail about local noise and live music, while the description of the event type itself is rather brief, stating only that it is a beach party. The tone is appropriate for an informal letter to a friend, maintaining a clear purpose throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter presents a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing that separates the greeting, the main purpose, the reasoning, the nostalgic reflection, the request for help, and the sign-off. Cohesive devices are used, but some referencing and linking are mechanical or slightly awkward, such as starting a sentence with 'Persuing it'. While the progression of ideas is generally logical, the connections between sentences occasionally lack smoothness, which places the response firmly at this level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common phrases such as 'hectic routine', 'foremost reason', and 'zeal and zest'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that reflect this level, including 'Persuing' instead of 'Pursuing', 'collegemates', 'badge' instead of 'batch', and 'refreash'. Although these inaccuracies exist, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an ability to construct compound and subordinate clauses, such as conditional and reason clauses. There are several grammar and punctuation errors present, including missing articles and prepositions (e.g., 'It's long time', 'in contact of all of our friends'), incorrect comma splices, and tense slips ('we have not seen each other'). These errors occur regularly but rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the message without significant difficulty.
