Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mike,
I hope you are doing well. As you are aware, we completed our graduation 10 years ago. On this occasion, I am hosting an event for our friends and batchmates, and I will require your assistance to make the event exceptionally entertaining for everyone.
I am organising a dinner celebration next Monday on the rooftop restaurant overlooking our university, which will help in refreshing our memories. The dinner will serve a fix set of menu, where starters and drinks will serve first follows by the main course. I believe this will be an ideal way to have interaction amongst friends, share past stories, and catch up with batchmates, which is not possible owing to a hectic lifestyle.
I need your help in sending invitations as I am unable to reach out to few classmates. In addition, please suggest some games to keep everyone engage, which brings immense joy and happiness.
I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Best wishes,
Craig

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your letter successfully addresses all parts of the prompt, showing a clear purpose and maintaining an appropriate semi-formal tone throughout. You clearly state the kind of event you want to organise, which is a dinner celebration next Monday at a rooftop restaurant overlooking your university. Furthermore, you explain the reasons for this choice well, mentioning how it helps refresh memories, allows interaction, and helps catch up despite busy lifestyles. You also describe the help needed by asking Mike to assist with sending invitations to classmates you cannot reach and suggesting games. All bullet points are well covered, and the ideas are extended and supported effectively, though some aspects, such as the dinner menu details, could have been streamlined to focus more on the core purpose of the celebration. To reach a higher band, your ideas could be extended with even more specific details about the event plans while maintaining concise paragraph development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving smoothly from the opening purpose of the letter to the event details in the second paragraph, and finally to your request for help in the third paragraph. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'As you are aware', 'In addition', and 'I am looking forward to hearing from you soon' to guide the reader effortlessly through your text. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. To push into the higher bands, you could incorporate a wider variety of more sophisticated and subtle cohesive ties between sentences, ensuring that transitions feel entirely natural and unobtrusive rather than relying on standard transitional markers.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'batchmates', 'hectic lifestyle', and 'exceptionally entertaining'. However, there are a few inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, writing that the dinner will serve a 'fix set of menu' contains a word form error, and the phrase 'where starters and drinks will serve first follows by the main course' shows issues with active and passive voice and word choice. Additionally, 'keep everyone engage' should be 'keep everyone engaged'. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they prevent you from achieving a higher band. To improve, you should focus on precise word forms, accurate collocations, and checking your phrasing of everyday concepts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating structures such as relative clauses ('which will help in refreshing our memories') and conditional or causal clauses. There are some errors in grammar, particularly regarding verb forms and voice, such as 'where starters and drinks will serve first follows by the main course', which lacks correct passive construction. However, you demonstrate good control over basic punctuation and sentence boundaries, and most of your complex structures are successfully formed. The grammar errors present do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you would need to produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and eliminate minor slips in verb agreements and voice transformations.
