Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Riya,

I hope you're doing well; it feels like ages we haven't met. I am writing this letter to invite you to celebrate 25 years anniversary of our college, which is next month on 2 oct' 2026.

I was planning to organize a small get together in the college. Firstly, we can invite all the teachers and staff members even the ones who left the college. Secondly, I was thinking for entertainment to have some games and later that evening we can have dinner together. lastly, cake cutting ceremony.

I feel this would be the best way to interact with everyone by indulging in fun game activities such as, ballon bursting, musical chair and mimicry. I will need your help in gathering information of all the students and also, if you could create a what's app group where we can share all the important updates regarding the event.

let me know how you feel about this idea and would love to hear more about any new ideas you have for the event.

love

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, but the development of ideas is uneven. For instance, the discussion regarding the celebration event and the specific help needed with gathering student information and creating a WhatsApp group are relevant, but there is a notable contradiction in the prompt details regarding the anniversary timeframe, as the opening mentions a twenty-five-year college anniversary instead of the ten years requested in the prompt. While the tone is appropriate for a friendly letter, some points are presented in a somewhat abrupt list-like manner, such as the mention of the cake-cutting ceremony, which leaves certain ideas slightly under-developed and keeps the task response profile at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable beginning, middle, and end appropriate for a personal correspondence. Paragraphing is utilized to separate different aspects of the request, such as the event description in the second paragraph and the request for help in the third. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or somewhat abrupt, particularly with transition phrases like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'lastly', which lack smooth integration. Referencing and linking between sentences could be more fluid to ensure a clearer progression of ideas throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's intentions. There are successful attempts to use less common items and functional phrases, such as 'get together', 'indulging in fun game activities', and 'gathering information'. Nevertheless, there are some word-choice and mechanical errors, such as 'ages we haven't met' instead of 'ages since we last met', as well as spelling and capitalization lapses like 'ballon bursting' and 'what's app'. These minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they prevent the score from moving into a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses successfully as seen in sentences like 'I am writing this letter to invite you to celebrate...' and 'I feel this would be the best way to interact...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('cake cutting ceremony' instead of 'a cake cutting ceremony'), minor preposition issues, and inconsistent punctuation like the lowercase 'let me know' at the start of the final paragraph. Despite these occasional errors, the structures remain generally clear and rarely impede the reader's understanding.
