IELTS Writing Task 1 question
It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter
• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise
• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Elisa,
I hope you are doing well.
It’s been a decade since we graduated from the University and it’s a quite long since we last hang out. I am writing you to inform that I am planning to organize an event this coming December for our batch reunion and a celebration for the 10th year anniversary since we graduated. I am planning to book the resort of my cousin here in our town, which will be near to most of our friends.
It is a good way to celebrate because we will have a chance to see each other, enjoy and hang outs. While we are enjoying with the pool, we will prepare food as well or can do some grilling or barbecue. With this event, we will catch up with everyone and be able to share some experience since we parted ways.
The only thing I need from you is to help me with the invitations, I need your help to contact some of our batch mates, distribute all the invitation letters and take the list of confirm attendees in order for me to negotiate with my cousin.
Thank you for your kind consideration and hopefully all our batch mates will be there.
See you soonest!
Yours faithfully,
Jessica

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You successfully cover all three parts of the task prompt, earning a solid score for this criterion. You clearly state the kind of celebration you want to organise by mentioning a batch reunion at your cousin's resort. You also explain why it is a good idea, noting that it provides a convenient location near friends, a chance to swim, grill barbecue, and catch up on lost time. Additionally, you describe the exact help you need from Elisa regarding the invitations and tracking confirmed attendees. All requirements are addressed, though the explanation of why the resort setting is ideal could be slightly more fully extended and detailed to push towards a higher level. Overall, your purpose and tone are entirely appropriate for a general friendly letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from introducing the reunion idea to explaining the venue and finally requesting help. You make use of standard friendly opening and closing conventions and divide your thoughts into readable paragraphs. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect your ideas, such as phrases like 'While we are enjoying' and 'With this event'. However, referencing and transitions are at times a little mechanical rather than seamlessly integrated, which keeps the text at this level. For instance, smoother linking between sentences in the second paragraph would enhance the flow. Overall, the structure of the letter is easy to follow and guides the reader naturally through your message.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases like 'batch reunion', 'parted ways', and 'kind consideration'. Communication is successfully maintained throughout the letter, but there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing. For example, expressions like 'it’s a quite long since we last hang out' contain unnatural phrasing and tense handling ('hang out' instead of 'hung out'), and 'take the list of confirm attendees' should be 'collect the list of confirmed attendees'. Furthermore, 'Yours faithfully' is used incorrectly at the end of the letter; since you addressed your friend by name, you should have used a friendly sign-off like 'Yours sincerely' or 'Best wishes'. These lexical slips and awkward collocations prevent the vocabulary score from rising further.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You display a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over standard structures like conditional and prepositional phrases. There are, however, several errors in grammar and punctuation scattered throughout the response. For instance, you write 'it’s a quite long since', which contains an unnecessary article and incorrect adjective/noun phrasing. Another error appears in 'I am writing you to inform that', where the preposition 'to' is missing before 'you'. You also write 'near to most of our friends', where 'near' does not require 'to', and 'See you soonest!', which is grammatically non-standard. While these errors occur regularly, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to understand your message without difficulty. To improve further, you should focus on sharpening your control over prepositions, verb tenses, and fixed grammatical patterns.
