IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear friend,

Hello, how are you? Hope you are as fit as a fiddle. Its been 10 years since we have completed our graduation. I was thinking to plan an event to celebrate this anniversary with our classmates.

For the event, we should make a reservation at a resort and throw a party for our ten year anniversary. We can organise on the weekend so that everyone can gather up and have fun just like old days. Moreover, some of our classmates can prepare dance performances like we used to prepare in our college.

I believe that it is a great way of reliving those moments, the ones we made in the college. We will also be able to reunite with those friends who live far away from us. Nevertheless, it will be a nostalgic experience for all of us.

You can assist me in finding the best resort for the event considering our budget. Additionally, I will need your help for sending out invitations to our friends on prior basis.

Looking forward to the meet up.

Yours lovingly,

Ben

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt in a clear and appropriate informal tone. You have clearly stated the kind of celebration event you want to organise by suggesting a resort party for the ten-year anniversary. You also explained why this would be a good idea, mentioning the benefits of reliving old moments, reuniting with distant friends, and creating a nostalgic experience. Additionally, you successfully described the help needed, asking for assistance with finding a resort within budget and sending out advance invitations. All bullet points are covered adequately, though some ideas, such as the dancing performances, could have been extended slightly further to demonstrate higher-level development. The tone remains friendly and suitable for writing to a college friend from the opening salutation to the closing sign-off.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression from beginning to end. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: introducing the reason for writing, proposing the event, explaining the benefits, and requesting specific help. You use cohesive devices flexibly to link your ideas, such as 'Moreover', 'I believe that', 'Nevertheless', and 'Additionally'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating distinct thoughts into readable blocks of text. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional transitional links feel slightly mechanical rather than entirely natural, which keeps the letter firmly within a solid structural standard.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your meaning with an informal and friendly tone. You attempt some less common vocabulary and idiomatic phrases, such as 'fit as a fiddle' and 'nostalgic experience'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as writing 'completed our graduation' instead of 'graduated', and using 'on prior basis' instead of 'in advance'. Spelling and word choices are generally clear and do not impede communication, but these occasional slips prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures reasonably well, such as 'so that everyone can gather up and have fun just like old days'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation present throughout the text, including a punctuation error in 'Its been 10 years' (missing apostrophe in 'It's'), an awkward phrasing in 'I was thinking to plan' instead of 'I was thinking of planning', and a minor preposition issue with 'in the college' instead of 'in college'. However, these errors are relatively minor and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow your message easily.
