IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 5.5)

I hope you all are doing well. I am organising an event for all of us so I would like to invite you all.

I am organising an event for reunion. I think many of us since we left college did not met. Therefore, I decide meet you all. I believe it will be a big reunion.

I believe it will be good to celebrate since it had been 10 years we did not met. Now we all are physiotherapist's, some are going to move abroad, some are opening their own clinics, hospitals. I think this is the only way we can meet, listening to each other, sharing ideas and thoughts.

I need a help to organise this event including restaurant booking, we need to decide that party will held at night or morning. I believe if we spread money with each other, then we can celebrate in a good way.

I hope you all will come together. We will enjoy and laughing.

Yours lovingly,

Rajandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You have attempted to cover all parts of the task prompt, including the type of celebration, reasons for it, and the help needed. However, the development of these ideas is rather limited and lacks specific detail. For example, while you mention wanting to organise a reunion, the description remains quite basic. Furthermore, addressing the letter as 'I hope you all are doing well' and 'Dear ...' suggests a misunderstanding of writing to an individual friend, as the prompt asks you to write to 'one of your college friends', yet the opening and closing indicate you are addressing a group ('invite you all', 'Yours lovingly'). To reach a higher level, you should ensure the response is tailored to a single recipient and fully develop each bullet point with richer, more extended explanations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

Your letter shows a basic overall arrangement, with paragraphs attempting to separate different points such as the event type, the reasons, and the requested help. However, the logical progression is hindered by repetitive phrasing and abrupt transitions. For instance, sentences like 'I am organising an event for an event for reunion' or repeating 'I believe' frequently make the structure feel mechanical rather than fluid. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as shifting between addressing a single friend and a group of classmates. To improve coherence and achieve a clearer progression, you need to use a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices and ensure your ideas flow naturally from one sentence to the next without unnecessary repetition.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is minimally adequate for the task, but it features a limited range with noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. For instance, phrases like 'did not met' and 'decide meet' show confusion with verb forms, while 'spread money with each other' is an unnatural collocation for sharing expenses. You also attempted some less common vocabulary such as 'physiotherapist's' with an incorrect apostrophe. To reach a higher band, you should expand your control of less common lexical items, improve your command of natural collocations, and check your word forms and spelling carefully before finalising your text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

Your writing demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and repetitive patterns like 'I believe'. When you attempt more complex structures, they are frequently faulty, such as in the clause 'since it had been 10 years we did not met' or 'we need to decide that party will held at night or morning'. There are frequent errors in verb tenses, auxiliary verbs, prepositions, and article usage throughout the response, which can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve your grammar score, you should work on mastering past and present tense consistency, correctly forming subordinate clauses, and reducing basic grammatical errors by using a broader mix of accurate sentence forms.
