It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.
Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Tim,
How has it been? It has been a while since we both caught up. What else could be more fun than for me to get in touch with you to let you know that I am planning to arrange our 10th college graduation anniversary where all of our classmates could get together and whoop it up.
So, the idea is that all of our class fellows could spare time from our regular monotonous routines lives and meet with other members of the class to have blast. For that, I can happily arrange a party followed by a dinner at the banquet pavilion next to our college. Refreshments and dinner will be paid by the participants, however, the venue reservation is me as I would be able to redeem a discount there. At the end of the dinner, I have also planned a quiz for the attendees.
I thought it would be fantastic to get in touch with all my friends at a venue where we all could party and dance, get away from our day-in-day-out schedules, and to live it up with the buddies whom we have spent memorable time with. This will not only be our opportunity to relive our happy moments with our friends but will also be an occasion to meet our friends' families, and to strengthen our companionship.
Although I am pretty confident about all the arrangements and can manage by myself, but still would appreciate your help with arranging a DJ for the event. I could recall that you were friend with that popular DJ from our college. The event's vibe would go through the roof with a DJ who knows how to set the mood, and I am confident that your friend has this capability. Please let know if it would be possible for you.
Yours sincerely,
Nauman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You successfully cover all three bullet points required by the task prompt, addressing the purpose of the letter fully. You describe the kind of event you want to organise, which is a 10th college graduation anniversary featuring a party and dinner at a banquet pavilion, followed by a quiz. You also explain why this celebration is beneficial, highlighting the chance to break away from monotonous routines, reconnect with old peers, and strengthen companionship. Furthermore, you clearly describe the help you need, asking your friend Tim to arrange a popular DJ. The response demonstrates a clear tone suitable for a semi-formal or friendly letter. To reach the next level, you could extend and support your ideas with even greater depth and precision, avoiding slight over-generalizations in how the event benefits everyone.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter shows a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the initial greeting and purpose of writing in the first paragraph, to the details of the event and venue in the second, the underlying reasons for the celebration in the third, and finally the request for help in the conclusion. You use cohesive devices flexibly, such as referencing ('For that', 'This will not only') and conjunctions, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, guiding the reader effortlessly from one point to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary that allows for some flexibility and precision, successfully attempting less common items with general awareness of style and collocation, such as 'monotonous routines', 'whoop it up', and 'go through the roof'. However, there are occasional lexical errors and awkward collocations that prevent a higher score, such as 'regular monotonous routines lives' where the phrasing is repetitive, and 'venue reservation is me' where a preposition or verb is missing. Additionally, phrases like 'friend with' instead of 'friends with' show minor slips in word choice, though communication is never impeded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a variety of complex sentence structures alongside simple forms, displaying a mix of good grammatical control. There are frequent error-free sentences, such as 'Refreshments and dinner will be paid by the participants' and 'This will not only be our opportunity to relive our happy moments...'. However, a few grammatical errors persist, including prepositional and structural slips like 'routines lives' and 'Please let know if it would be possible', where the object pronoun is missing after 'let'. Punctuation is generally handled well, and while these occasional errors are noticeable, they rarely impede overall communication.
