Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way
• describe what help you need to organise this event
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear ....................................,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Gurpreet,
How've you been? It's a long time since we last caught up. I want to invite you to join me for the celebration of 10 years of my college. I've invited others from our class as well to have some fun and rewind the old memories.
Do you remember, during our college time, we always wanted to go for a vacation at a beach site. Therefore, I've been planning to arrange the party at the beach area. I know, it's not going to be same experience as of a trip but at least we could enjoy the beach a little bit.
Additionally, a party at a beach site is also quite enjoyable since it's summer time and we could get the most out of the weather and the place. One of my uncles has a house near Mount Chirst beach area, thus accommodation isn't an issue for us. I was also planning to do some fishing as you like it the most and serve the same at BBQ later.
Given the circumstances, I believe it's going to be a lot to prepare. So, I'm wondering if you could come and help me in making some arrangements. The food for non-vegetarians will be organised because we will do fishing, but we had few friends who were pure vegetarians. To arrange food for them, I need your assistance. Furthermore, I don't have contact information of everyone, so if you could help me in inviting the people I left.
Hope to hear from you soon. See you!
Love,
Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all parts of the prompt in a friendly, semi-formal tone appropriate for writing to a college friend. You clearly state the kind of celebration you want to organise by suggesting a beach party near your uncle's house. You also effectively explain why this is a good choice, mentioning the summer weather, accommodation availability, and the opportunity for fishing and a barbecue. Furthermore, you describe the specific help you need from Gurpreet, such as assisting with vegetarian food arrangements and contacting missing classmates. All three bullet points from the prompt are fully covered. To move toward the highest bands, some ideas could be extended with even finer details about the timeline or schedule of the anniversary event, showcasing a more fully developed overarching vision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus: greeting and general invitation in the first paragraph, the beach venue concept in the second, additional details about the house and fishing in the third, and finally the specific requests for help in the fourth paragraph. You use cohesive devices reasonably well, such as transitional phrases like 'Therefore', 'Additionally', and 'Furthermore', which guide the reader smoothly through your thoughts. Referencing is generally clear, though paragraphing could be even tighter by blending the middle sections to prevent minor fragmentation of your supporting ideas. To reach an even higher standard, you could employ a wider variety of more subtle and sophisticated cohesive links rather than relying on standard connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'anniversary', 'accommodation', and 'contact information'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For instance, writing 'celebration of 10 years of my college' is unnatural, and 'rewind the old memories' should ideally be 'rekindle' or 'relive' old memories. You also wrote 'trip but at least we could enjoy the beach a little bit' and 'Mount Chirst beach area'. While these spelling and word choice errors do not impede communication, they reflect the characteristics of this band level. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate more precise collocations and ensure idiomatic expressions are used accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You utilise a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as conditional and causative clauses like 'if you could come and help me' and 'so if you could help me in inviting the people I left.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('at beach area' instead of 'at the beach' and 'same experience as of a trip') and slight preposition slips. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and many sentences remain completely accurate. To step up to a higher grammatical tier, you should aim for a higher frequency of error-free complex structures and refine your usage of articles and prepositions within complex patterns.
