Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sam,
I hope this letter finds you well. I'm writing this letter to invite you to the event that I am organising to celebrate ten years anninversary with all of our college friends and classmates.
To begin with, I booked a banquet hall to celebrate this anniversary. I booked for 50 people. This is a new hall with all of the modern facilities in it. Also, the main feature of this hall is that decoration is also included in the rent.
Moving forward, this idea come to my mind since I missed our clolleged days a lot. After the graduation, everyone become busy in their personal lives. There was no chance to see one another after that. That is why I was thinking this kind of programe will give everyone a chance to get togather.
Moreover, if you could assist me what kind of food i can provide in the party.
yours truly,
Dav

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt, ensuring the task purpose is generally fulfilled. You mention the kind of celebration event you would like to organise by stating, 'I booked a banquet hall to celebrate this anniversary,' and you explain why this is a good choice because you 'missed our colleged days a lot' and want to give everyone a chance to get together. You also touch upon the help you need by asking for assistance with the food. However, some areas are slightly under-developed or lack full clarity. For instance, the explanation of the help you need is brief and ends abruptly without fully exploring options. To reach a higher level, you could expand more naturally on your ideas, providing richer detail about the venue features and more thoroughly discussing the food arrangements with your friend.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure appropriate for a personal correspondence. You use standard opening and closing conventions such as 'Dear Sam' and 'yours truly, Dav', alongside basic cohesive devices like 'To begin with', 'Also', and 'Moreover' to guide the reader through your points. However, the use of cohesive devices occasionally feels a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as 'Moving forward', which is more suited to a presentation or formal speech than a friendly letter. Additionally, paragraphing is functional, but referencing and transitions between sentences can sometimes feel slightly disjointed. To improve, you should employ a smoother variety of natural, informal linking words and ensure that your ideas flow seamlessly from one sentence to the next without abrupt shifts.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your message with common words and phrases like 'banquet hall', 'modern facilities', and 'personal lives'. You also attempt some less common vocabulary items, although this is accompanied by some spelling and word-choice inaccuracies. For example, 'anninversary' contains a spelling error, 'clolleged' is misspelled, and phrases like 'become busy in their personal lives' or 'this idea come to my mind' show minor unnatural phrasing or word forms. These errors do not impede communication, as your meaning remains clear to the reader. To move up to a higher level, focus on eliminating spelling mistakes, refining your word choices to sound more natural, and incorporating a wider variety of precise, idiomatic expressions suited to informal letters.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable attempt at structuring your sentences. You successfully use subordinate clauses, such as 'that decoration is also included in the rent' and 'if you could assist me what kind of food i can provide'. However, there are some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. For instance, you have sentence fragments or incomplete constructions, such as 'Moreover, if you could assist me what kind of food i can provide in the party,' which lacks a main clause completion. There are also minor tense and agreement slips, like 'this idea come to my mind' instead of 'came'. While these errors rarely impede communication, achieving a higher standard requires greater control over complex sentence patterns, correct prepositions, and careful proofreading to ensure all sentences are grammatically complete.
