IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Dear Prince,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter to inform you about an event which I am thinking to organise.

As you already know it's been 10 years since we all graduated from college. Ever since we all have been busy in our lives. I got an idea to organise a get together in which we can invite all our batchmates and go for a good dinner. I think it's a good idea. All of us can have a break from busy schedules and get a chance to relax and enjoy the moment. I was looking for someone who could give mesuggestions and idea about the place and events which we can organise.

I hope you like my idea and we can organise an event on the earliest convinience. Looking forward to hear from your side and eagerly waiting to have a friends reunion.

Regards,

Pushpjeet Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address all parts of the task by mentioning the kind of celebration event, explaining why it would be good, and describing the help needed. However, your ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, while you state that you want to 'go for a good dinner' to take a break from busy schedules, this point is not fully extended or supported with specific details about the venue or activities. To move to a higher level, you need to fully develop your ideas by adding more elaboration and specific context to each bullet point rather than relying on brief, simple statements.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

Your letter shows some basic organisation with a clear beginning and ending, and the purpose of the communication is generally clear. However, there is no strong overall progression between sentences, and cohesive devices are somewhat repetitive and mechanical, such as repeatedly using phrases like 'I think it's a good idea'. Paragraphing is attempted, but transitions between thoughts lack smoothness. To improve your score in this area, you should use a wider variety of cohesive ties and ensure your ideas flow naturally from one point to the next without abrupt shifts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully communicating your basic message with everyday words. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'mesuggestions' (spacing error) and awkward phrasing like 'on the earliest convinience' (spelling error and inappropriate collocation). You attempt some less common vocabulary, but these attempts contain inaccuracies that slightly hinder natural expression. To achieve a higher band, you need to use a wider range of precise lexical items with correct collocations and accurate spelling throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex forms that are somewhat basic. There are frequent errors in grammar and mechanics, such as missing articles ('go for a good dinner', 'hear from your side') and an incorrect verb pattern in 'thinking to organise' instead of 'thinking of organising'. These frequent errors can cause occasional difficulty for the reader. To improve, you should incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex structures and pay closer attention to prepositions, articles, and verb complementation.
