IELTS Writing Task 1 question

It is ten years since you left college. You'd like to organise an event to celebrate this anniversary with all your friends and classmates from college.

Write a letter to one of your college friends. In your letter

• say what kind of celebration event you'd like to organise

• explain why you think it would be good to celebrate in this way

• describe what help you need to organise this event

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Ali,

I have been receiving your letters regularly and I apologize for not responding to you earlier. Since you have mentioned in your last letter that you will be visiting hometown next month, I think this calls for a grand reunion of all our college batchmates.

I think same is organized periodically by our college but none of our camarades ever attend. If we organize it according to everyone's availability, I think majority of us will be able to join. Also, since holiday season is starting next month, I believe most of our batchmates will be visiting town.

As I am working at an event management company, I would take care of all the arrangements, such as the venue and catering. However, I would require your help in coordinating with all the friends as I am not really in touch with them. Additionally, you can create a group on social media where we can finalize date to which most of us agree.

Please let me know if any further help is needed. Hope to see you soon.

Your Friend,

Shaneel Ahmed

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You successfully cover all bullet points of the task, meeting the core requirements of a general letter. You mention the kind of celebration event you would like to organise, which is a grand reunion for your college batchmates, and you explain the reasoning behind this by pointing to your friend's upcoming visit and the start of the holiday season. Furthermore, you describe the specific help you need, namely coordinating with friends and creating a social media group. However, your response sits at this level because some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the mention that your college organises a periodic event which your comrades never attend is somewhat unclear and detracts slightly from the main purpose. To reach a higher level, you should extend and fully support all your ideas with clearer explanations without introducing tangential points.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement and logical progression throughout, showing clear organisation of your thoughts from greeting to sign-off. You use basic cohesive devices appropriately, such as 'Additionally' and 'However', and paragraphing is managed sufficiently to separate different topics like the event concept, logistics, and calls to action. The reason your score reflects the higher half of the band is that your referencing is occasionally slightly faulty or mechanical, such as 'I think same is organized', where the missing article affects the smooth flow. To achieve the next band, you need to ensure that referencing is always crystal clear and that cohesive devices are used more flexibly and unobtrusively throughout the entire letter.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'batchmates', 'camarades', and 'event management'. Your spelling and word choice are generally clear and do not impede communication, which easily satisfies the criteria. To push into the next band, you need to improve accuracy in word choice, spelling, and collocations. For example, using 'camarades' contains a spelling error and is slightly unnatural in this context compared to 'classmates' or 'friends', and the phrase 'visiting hometown' misses a necessary article. Expanding your use of precise vocabulary with better stylistic control will help you attain a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You display a satisfactory mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures like 'Since you have mentioned in your last letter...' and 'As I am working at an event management company...'. There are some errors in grammar, such as missing articles ('visiting hometown' instead of 'visiting your hometown') and minor structural slips ('finalize date' instead of 'finalize a date'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and your overall control of basic structures is solid. To reach the next tier, you must produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences and demonstrate tighter control over articles, determiners, and prepositional patterns within complex structures.
