Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Manpreet,
Hope you are doing well.
I am writing this letter to inform you that I am planning to organise a party this weekend , it has been 10 years passed since we left college. it is kind of our 10th anniversary and i am inviting our classmates and college friends.
The reason behind celebrating this anniversary is to reunion with our friend, many years passed and we have not met each other as everyone is busy in their life with lot of work and family responibilities. It is the time now when everyone need to take a break from their hectic schedule of their life and recall college days memories when they used to spend time together. I need your help to plan such event with various duties as selecting place of event, food arrangements and how to invite everyone. If you can come at my home we can plan in a good manner.
Looking forward to meet with you.
with love,
Sahil

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You successfully cover all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You mention that you want to organise a party this weekend to celebrate ten years since leaving college, explain that the reason is to reunite with friends and take a break from busy lives, and describe the help needed by asking your friend to assist with planning, selecting a venue, food, and invitations. The response meets all basic requirements, showing features of a higher band by clearly addressing the core purpose of the prompt. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed, such as the specific details of the event or how everyone will be reached, which keeps the response at this level. To reach a higher score, you should expand more fully on each bullet point with extended details and deeper explanations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your letter presents a coherent overall arrangement, and the main ideas follow a logical sequence from announcing the event to explaining the reasons and requesting help. You use basic linking words to connect your thoughts. However, the progression between sentences sometimes feels a bit mechanical, and referencing is not always clear, such as when transitioning abruptly between ideas without sufficient cohesive devices. Furthermore, the paragraphing is less effective because the middle paragraph packs multiple distinct ideas—the reason for the reunion, the need for a break, and the request for help—into one dense block of text. To improve, you should separate your thoughts into clear, distinct paragraphs and use a wider range of cohesive devices more naturally.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully using everyday terms and attempting some less common vocabulary such as 'anniversary', 'responibilities' (spelling error), and 'hectic schedule'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices that prevent a higher score, including 'reunion' used as a verb ('to reunion'), missing prepositions, and spelling slips. These inaccuracies do not heavily impede communication, but they highlight limitations in lexical precision and word formation. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to use a wider variety of less common lexical items accurately, paying close attention to word forms, collocations, and correct spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms to express your message, attempting structures like conditional clauses ('If you can come at my home we can plan in a good manner'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including comma splices, run-on sentences ('...this weekend , it has been...', '...college. it is kind of...'), missing capitalization at the beginning of sentences, and preposition errors ('come at my home' instead of 'come to my house'). Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To reach the next level, you need to increase your control over punctuation, eliminate run-on sentences, and ensure greater accuracy when constructing more complex grammatical forms.
