Dear ....................................,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Maya,

I hope you and your family doing well. Yesturday I saw our collegemate Ramya in a train journmey. I went to chennai from kochi for a compnay duty. Ramya also get in the same train from Trivandrum because she is working in chennai now, she changed alot. We were meeting each other back by 10 years. After graduation I didnot seen any of our collegemates. We talked alot throughout our journey. Additionally, she told me our principal is going to retire in the coming december.

When I passed this message in our college group whatsapp group chat, most of our classmates wish to see each other and arrange a reunion program related to our principal's retiring function. I would like to organise a reunion function with our principal and our teachers.

I think this coming december would be a great opportunity for us to see each other because on that time, there willnot be any regular classes and everyone should be available on that time. We can arrange a reunion meeting in the morning and after that a small get togther at the nearest Pallaruvi resturant. I heard now this resturant is a well known north and south indian resturant.

I will arrange the location and decarations of the event. Could you please help me to connect with our old teachers who were retired. I checked every ways but I cannot find it. It will be a great help for us. I already asked in the group they were also checking, if they got, they will update in the group.

Yours lovingly,

Rev

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, satisfying the requirements for general task achievement. You clearly state the kind of celebration event you wish to organise, which is a reunion meeting with your principal and teachers followed by a small get-together at a restaurant. You explain the reasons why this time is ideal, specifically mentioning that your principal is retiring in December and that everyone will be available during that period without regular classes. Furthermore, you describe the specific help needed by asking your friend to connect with retired teachers. While the purpose of the letter is clear and all bullet points are addressed, some ideas show a slight lack of extended development, placing the response solidly in the mid-range of achievement. To reach the next level, you could expand slightly on the nature of the activities planned for the reunion to provide even richer detail.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from your chance encounter on the train to the group chat discussion, the proposed timing and location, and finally the request for help. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different topics, such as the initial story in the first paragraph, the group reaction and event plan in the second, the timing and restaurant choice in the third, and your specific roles in the final paragraph. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or features repetitive linking elements. Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional transitional lapses keep the flow from being entirely seamless. To improve further, you could use a wider and more flexible variety of cohesive devices to connect your sentences and paragraphs more naturally, ensuring smoother transitions between your narrative background and the actual invitation details.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying your message despite a limited range. You attempt some less common vocabulary items and phrases, but these are often marred by spelling errors and minor word choice inaccuracies, such as 'collegemate', 'Yesturday', 'journmey', 'compnay', 'alot', 'decarations', and 'resturant'. These spelling mistakes and slip-ups do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score. There is also occasional repetition of basic words like 'train', 'group', and 'time'. To achieve a higher band, you need to demonstrate a wider resource of vocabulary, use less common lexical items with greater precision and stylistic awareness, and eliminate basic spelling and word-form errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

Your letter demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, allowing you to narrate events and explain your plans effectively. There are several instances of successful sentence structures, but these are balanced by frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding verb forms, tenses, prepositions, and punctuation. Examples include 'I hope you and your family doing well' (missing auxiliary verb), 'Ramya also get in' (tense agreement), 'didnot seen' (incorrect auxiliary and form), 'on that time' (preposition choice, where 'at that time' is preferred), and 'there willnot be' (contracted spelling and spacing). These errors require some effort from the reader to parse, though they rarely obscure the overall meaning entirely. To move up, you must increase your proportion of error-free sentences and exercise better control over verb tenses and prepositions within complex grammatical patterns.
