Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Annie,

I am writing this letter to inform you about an event I am planning to organize for our friends and classmates get together because its been ten years we haven't met.

This event is particularly an alumni's dinner and we would likely to setup some games and standup show for entertainment. Cafes have small space to oraganize such events that why I chose to resrve a lounge of five star hotel along with all major facilities.

Since we graduated from our college, we didnot catch up each other and not even discuss whats happening in our lives. The main reason to organize a party that we all will be together, have positve discussions and recreate memories to revive.

However, managing the whole event seems tiring so i would like you to come to my place two days before and take some responsibilities to manage it properly. There are catering management, preparing scripts for show and hosting so that we can easily distribute the tasks to make it sucessfull

I look forward hearing from you.

Yours sincerly,

Manayer

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, earning a solid rating. You clearly state what kind of event you want to organize by proposing an alumni dinner with games and a stand-up show at a five-star hotel lounge. You also explain why this celebration is beneficial, mentioning that it has been ten years since college and that it is a chance to catch up, have positive discussions, and recreate memories. Additionally, you clearly describe the help you need by asking Annie to arrive early to assist with catering management, preparing scripts, and hosting. All bullet points are well-addressed with extended and supported ideas, showing a clear purpose and tone suitable for a letter to a friend, even though some minor generalisations occur.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph-by-paragraph structure that addresses the greeting, the purpose, the location, the reasoning, the request for help, and the sign-off. Ideas progress logically from the announcement of the event to the venue choice, the justification, and finally the practical arrangements. While the overall organization is clear, some cohesive devices feel slightly mechanical or are impacted by awkward transitions, such as 'that why I chose' and 'The main reason to organize a party that we all will be'. These slight lapses in referencing and conjunction use prevent the text from reaching a higher level of seamless cohesion, sitting comfortably at the bridge between competent organisation and fully flexible linkage.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary range is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your message about the anniversary reunion. You attempt less common lexical items such as 'alumni's dinner', 'five star hotel lounge', and 'positive discussions'. However, there are notable word choice, collocation, and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'organize for our friends and classmates get together', 'its been ten years', 'setup' used as a noun phrase, 'oraganize', 'resrve', 'didnot catch up each other', and 'sucessfull'. These errors do not impede overall communication because the meaning remains clear, but they restrict your lexical score due to the frequency of slips in spelling and standard collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at multi-clause structures such as 'Since we graduated from our college, we didnot catch up each other...'. However, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses, particularly involving prepositions, tense consistency, and verb patterns. Examples include 'its been ten years we haven't met', 'we would likely to setup' (should be 'would like to set up'), 'Cafes have small space to oraganize such events that why I chose' (comma splice and missing article), and 'I look forward hearing' (should be 'look forward to hearing'). These errors persist throughout the text, though they rarely impede communication, keeping the grammar performance firmly in the mid-range.
