Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Imran,

It has been ten years since we left our college. It's high time that we should plan a wonderful reunion party to revive old days. I am writing to you in particular to share my ideas regarding the event I am planning to organise to celebrate this prosperous occasion.

As you know, we all classmates have not been able to meet after our convocation ceremony, I believe this would be good time to once again meet and greet each other.

I would like to organise a short dinner at sunroof open terrace kitchen including our close friends. The place is perfect for evening dine consisting ecofriendly ambience and peaceful atmosphere. It serves delicious vegan food perfectly suitable to all our groupmates. I think this way we all can spend some quality time together after juggling between our busy schedules.

I need your help in inviting all the members. Moreover, you shall also need to be sharing the venue details along with time.I hope you like this idea and feel free to suggest me if anything I am missing out. Looking forward to meet you soon!

Yours faithfully

Saloni.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt, addressing the celebration event, the reasons for choosing it, and the specific help needed from the friend. For instance, the writer clearly proposes a short dinner at a sunroof open terrace kitchen, explains that it provides an eco-friendly ambiance and serves delicious vegan food suitable for everyone, and asks for assistance with invitations and sharing venue details. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or simplistic, sitting firmly in the middle band range. To reach a higher level, the writer could have expanded more on the personal significance of the reunion or added richer descriptions of the activities planned during the dinner rather than keeping the details brief.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter maintains a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear purpose established from the beginning. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the rationale for the event, the venue details, and the request for help. There are some signs of more advanced cohesive strategies, such as the use of transitional phrases like 'Moreover' and 'As you know'. However, cohesion can occasionally feel a bit mechanical or basic, and referencing at times lacks seamless integration, such as the transition into the bullet points or logistics. Improving the fluidity of inter-sentence connections and ensuring smoother logical progression throughout would elevate this score further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common phrases such as 'convocation ceremony', 'eco-friendly ambience', and 'juggling between our busy schedules'. Communication is never impeded by lexical choices. Nevertheless, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as 'prosperous occasion' (which is awkward in this context; 'auspicious' or 'special' would be more natural) and 'be sharing the venue details' (which is grammatically awkward). To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision and flexibility in word choice while minimizing unnatural collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting more intricate patterns like 'I am writing to you in particular to share my ideas regarding the event I am planning to organise'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as the tense usage in 'It's high time that we should plan' (which should be 'planned') and the missing space and punctuation slip in 'along with time.I hope'. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication. To move up to the next band, the writer would need to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and display tighter control over modal and subjunctive structures.
